Attention South Boston Residents! - URGENT!
PROPOSED CITY COUNCIL REDISTRICTING MAP WOULD SPLIT SOUTH BOSTON INTO 2 DISTRICTS; EMERGENCY MEETING ON WED, 10/19, 6PM AT THE CONDON SCHOOL.

Community Groups Resolve to File Suit if Approved by the City Council and Mayor.

With the City’s redistricting process currently underway, there are at least two proposed maps that would divide South Boston into District 2 and District 3. In particular, these maps would separate the Anne Lynch Homes at Old Colony and West Broadway Development into District 2 and District 3. If a map that splits South Boston is passed, this will negatively impact neighbors, communities of color, our seniors, veterans, and persons with disabilities who live in these housing developments, and greatly impact the ability for our residents to act together and advocate for their common interests.
The redistricting process will determine the makeup of each of the 9 City Council districts for the next ten years, and various maps can be proposed to be considered. Currently, there are maps proposed that would split South Boston into different districts, which will dilute the voices of South Boston residents. These actions would run contrary to longstanding redistricting principles of the preservation of prior districts and maintaining communities of interest.
In response to these maps, Council President Ed Flynn and the South Boston Elected Officials will be hosting an emergency meeting on redistricting on Wednesday, October 19th, 6pm at the Condon School (200 D St, South Boston) to discuss with neighbors about where we are in the process, and gather input from residents.

“One of our utmost priorities is to keep South Boston as a neighborhood together in District 2, so that this community can continue to be cohesive and not be divided into different districts,” said the South Boston Elected Officials in a joint statement. “We will oppose any map that proposes to separate South Boston into different City Council districts, especially as it impacts the representation and voices of neighbors living in public housing developments.”
“The proposed redistricting maps would divide our community and the West Broadway Housing Development to two separate districts, diluting our community’s collective voice,” said Phyllis Corbitt, President of the Anne Lynch Homes at Old Colony Resident Task Force, as well as Massachusetts Union of Public Housing Tenants. “We urge that these maps be withdrawn, and that our community of South Boston be united, particularly our public housing communities, so that we get the representation we are entitled to.
“We are aware of the proposal to divide Anne M. Lynch Homes at Old Colony and the West Broadway Development into two separate districts,” said Mercy Robinson, Executive Director of South Boston En Accion. “This proposal worries me as Executive Director of SBEA and a long-time resident of South Boston. Most, if not all of the diversity in Southie sits within the streets of the three Boston Housing Developments in South Boston. With most of the residents falling well under the poverty line, separating them straight down the middle of one of these developments is counterproductive on many fronts.”
“We are in opposition to any plan that would divide our community,” said Kathy Lafferty, Executive Director of the South Boston Neighborhood House. “There has been so much effort put in to unite our neighborhood - the work of community organizations, elected officials and neighbors coming together to create a cohesive community - and this plan just creates further division. We ask that this proposal be withdrawn.”
“The proposed maps would divide South Boston and our communities of interest. We oppose this move and ask the Committee to withdraw the proposal. If not, we will join with other parties in filing suit to protect our community’s rights,” said Thomas McGrath, President of the South Boston Citizens Association. “The City Council should be looking to unite our communities and our city, not divide us.”
“The proposed maps would divide Ward 6 into 2 districts for the first time, and our Ward fits entirely in the neighborhood of South Boston,” said Robert O’Shea, the Chair of Ward 6 Democratic Committee. “We urge the City Council to unite our Ward and our community of South Boston in District 2 as it has historically been, so that we get the representation our community of interest deserves.”
For more information on the meeting on Wednesday, please contact Councilor Flynn’s office at 617-635-3203 and [email protected].

Faith And Blue Celebrated At Lawn On D
The City of Boston was selected as a marquee event host for this year’s national Faith & Blue Weekend, which was scheduled from Friday, October 7 to Monday, October 10, 2022. The last event of the weekend was held on Columbus Day at Lawn On D and what a powerful event it was as community, faith leaders and law enforcement came together to eat, pray, sing, dance and have a great time as one in the same.
Mayor Wu, Commissioner Cox and his Command Staff, Suffolk County DA Kevin Hayden, Mass State Police, Mass Bay Transit Police, Suffolk County Sheriff and our own Captain Boyle C-6 and his team were all present at this wonderful event representing the Blue. Cardinal Sean O’Malley, Fr. Conway, Fr. White, Deacon Paul, Rev. Hutchins, Bishop Dickerson II, Rev. Groover, Rev. Bodrick and many more were representing multiple faiths and celebrating everybody. Council President Ed Flynn with his wife Kristen and State Rep. David Biele were in the crowd socializing with guests, LEO and enjoying the event. “It is always an honor to assist our friends at the Boston Police Department and the faith based community. Thanks to our partners at the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, we were able to ensure this special event took place right here in South Boston at the Lawn on D.” said Haley Dillon, Legislative Director for Senator Collins who coordinated the event.
Maybe if we had more of these events, it could be a way for the City of Boston to come together.

Alanna Devlin Ball - A True Champion
Breaks Warrior Games World Record
By Kevin Devlin
Alanna Devlin Ball, who recently retired from the United States Navy as a Lieutenant Commander, competed in the Department of Defense (DoD) Warrior Games held 19-28 August in Orlando, Florida. The games are composed of over 200 wounded, ill, and injured U.S. and International service members and veteran athletes.
Alanna, a cancer survivor and indeed a brave warrior beyond words. won five gold medals, a silver medal, and crushed a Warrior Games world record in the 50-meter backstroke swimming event.
She won a silver medal in women’s powerlifting, along with gold medals in the 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter freestyle, 50-meter breaststroke, 200-meter mixed relay, and 50-meter backstroke event as previously mentioned.
Alanna grew up in South Boston, attended Boston Latin Academy and excelled in swimming. She swam for the South Boston Boys and Girls Club, Quincy YMCA, USS Swimming and Boston Latin Academy, perennial Boston City League Champions. At BLA, she was the first seventh grader in MIAA history to be selected as an all-scholastic.
Alanna flourished academically receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees, subsequently earning her Naval Officer Commission at Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island.
After serving both overseas and stateside for the United States Navy for 12 years, she was diagnosed with brain cancer. The tumor was completely removed, and she underwent proton radiation and chemotherapy treatments.
In 2020, Alanna was contacted by the USSOCOM Warrior Care Program Recovery Care Coordinator assigned to Naval Special Warfare Group TWO in Virginia Beach, VA. She encouraged Alanna to try out for Team USSOCOM at their selection camp held in Tampa, Florida.
Alanna knew it would be fun and allow her to concentrate on something other than treatment. So, she trained every day and was selected to compete in swimming, rowing and powerlifting events.
Alanna was excited and grateful to represent Team USSOCOM. Being focused on these games and training for them provided her with a welcome respite from her daily concerns.
“Participating in this camp enabled me and my husband to focus on something other than the immense physical, psychological, and emotional effects my surgery and treatment had on me…while providing (her) incredible opportunities to explore and experience alternative avenues to both heal and thrive.”
Injuries are not always visible to the general onlooker, but Alanna is fully aware of that.
“One of my biggest things I have experienced is that people cannot always see an injury. You will see people in the DoD Warrior Games who do not show an injury, but there is a reason they are here. That’s why I am there.”
The Devlin and Ball families are proud of Alanna’s accomplishments at these Warrior Games.
Her bravery is immeasurable.
Her desire to compete and win is insatiable.
Her love of life is undeniable.
Her sense of purpose and willpower are without equal.
And our admiration and respect for her courage burns brighter.

EDITORIAL: South Boston Today Newspaper:
It's Columbus Day Whether The WOKE Crowd Likes It Or Not!

'In the world of politically correct, WOKE cancel culture bullying, It is believed by the advocates of that train of thought that all they need do is claim they are offended by something they don't like and it will be removed. Claiming it's racist gives the effort an even bigger boost or at least it used to. Those pushing this movement are doing so because of their success in certain cities around the country. They've seen the results - the fruits of their labor. 'Ban everything we don't like or we'll protest; even violently if we must and even boycott. And then the cowardly authorities bow to the demands and the threats and do the bidding and follow the orders of the radicals. Whether its a statue, a song on the radio, a picture on a tub of butter or the name of a street, it has worked in many places. This brings us to the upcoming Columbus Day holiday. There are those who demand it be eliminated. They don't like the Italian explorer so they demand his statues be torn down and the name of the day changed to things like 'Indigenous Peoples' Day, Fall Festival, 'Pumpkin Seed Day' or any number of other ridiculous changes. The fact that millions of Italian Americans like the holiday just as it is, matters not to the woke crowd. They want what they want and tradition be damned. The statue of Columbus in Boston was removed because a tiny vocal group demanded it. And this is why the cancel culture mob keeps coming back for more and more. There will be no end to these demands until officials; elected and others grow back bones and learn how to say 'NO'.
There are some who don't like Thanksgiving - this uniquely American and beautiful holiday, and have been working to eliminate even it. Give in to them and they will set their sites on getting rid of Christmas even harder than they have been for many years. The thought of removing Independence Day, held on July 4th each year makes those who hate our country salivate. All those Red, White and Blue flags, fireworks, parades and patriotism makes them nauseous. Success getting rid of the day we celebrate America's independence would be the ultimate feather in their caps.
Think about it, if people don't draw that line in the sand and start facing down the radicals, whose goal it is to destroy or dilute every cherished American tradition, they'll just keep on coming. If elected officials; whether they are federal, state or local, continue to run, duck and cover every time some group of malcontents with chips on their shoulders toward our country and for one holiday or tradition or another, this nation could one day lose it's identity completely, which is exactly what the radicals want. Americans, no matter what their background are welcome to celebrate the long Columbus Day weekend - it belongs to everyone. If the woke crowd doesn't like it, too damn bad. They can take their whiny, entitled attitudes and go somewhere else to pout. The name of this coming holiday is Columbus Day, it will always be Columbus Day - not Indigenous Peoples' Day, whether the woke crowd likes it or not.
