At Gamut, we define it as that realm of literature that dances on (and off!) the fringes of reality, exploring the deepest depths of human experience and emotionโ€”both the unnerving and the extraordinary.

Think The Haunting of Hill House or The Sandman or The Handmaidโ€™s Taleโ€”all stories where the inexplicable coexists with the familiar in a variety of fantastical genres:

๊ฉœ Fantasy
๊ฉœ Science fiction
๊ฉœ Horror
๊ฉœ Thriller

To the Gamut community,

Thank you to all of you who share our excitement for Issue One of Gamut Magazineโ€™s relaunch.

This week, weโ€™ve heard from some of you expressing concern about our issueโ€™s cover and whether or not AI was used to create it. Weโ€™ve also spoken with a couple of visual art/design professionals who agreed that it looked like it could be AI-generated.

In speaking with the artist, Kip Ayers Illustration, weโ€™ve learned that he has a unique method for creating this piece, which triggered the various AI detection tools to suggest that the art is AI-generated.

None of these tools are 100% fool-proof and while we love this cover, weโ€™ve ultimately decided to replace it with another work from Kip.

We cannot emphasize enough how much we appreciate our communityโ€™s shared values and passion for human-created artโ€”both written and visual.

So with all that said, weโ€™re proud to unveil our NEW cover for Issue One!

We hope you like it and will celebrate with us on January 1st as we officially open our doors to the House of Gamut.

Our โ€œ๐˜„๐—ต๐˜†โ€ is our everything here at Gamut.

In this note, our President, R. B. Wood, shares more on our mission to help writers and build a more inclusive publishing community for all โคต๏ธ

โ€œWhen Gamut Magazine folded in 2017, there were many in our fandom that were disappointed. The e-zine had great staff, amazing story selections, and a rabid fanbase.

Richard Thomas (the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the original Gamut) and I had a conversation back then. We were both in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago at a writing workshop and discussed all aspects of the Gamut business. We agreed, at the end of the conversation that working together on the project would have been funโ€”me with the business background and technology expertise paired with Richardโ€™s creative acumen might be a powerful team in the future.

That was the start of โ€˜House of Gamut,โ€™ but neither of us realized it at the time.

Fast forward to 2023, and we both are in a place in our lives when we are ready to try again. But this time, we will be doing more than a magazine. We want to create an author โ€˜incubatorโ€™ of sortsโ€”provide writing classes (teaching the beginner to the advanced students), provide reading material (the new Gamut Magazine that will debut 1/1/24) and add a publishing house to the mix. Read. Write. Publish.

We also agreed we want to provide more than that. There are some great small presses out there. But there are others that have not done the business aspects they needed to help both their authors and their readers. There are also so many aspiring writers who, with a little help, could become great authors.

These reasons are why we registered as a non-profit.

Firstly, we are building a new publishing business model. We want to pay professional rates to both our contractors and our writers. In the first iteration of Gamut, not enough money was raised for a multi-year ramp up. As a register 501c3, we can solicit tax-deductible donations to help supplement our costs. That system will be operational soon.

But more importantly, we will be soliciting donations so that we can work and mentor aspiring writers who may be from a marginalized or underprivileged background. This is one way to help give back to a community that has welcomed us both.

The third reason for using a non-profit model is transparency. We feel that writers, teachers and authors who work with us as well as donors and readers of our publications should be able to see how we operate and where the money of our organization is spent. House of Gamut has to be transparent as a non-profitโ€”thatโ€™s the law here in the U.S.

While we still plan on charging a subscription for Gamut Magazine, and charging for our books and classes, the only way to pay professional livable rates is to supplement our fees with donations. And by running our business transparently, the public can check in on how we are running as a business.

Then we can start teaching and mentoring the next generation of diverse authors.

The bottom line for Richard Thomas and I is that we want to run an efficient business, yes. But it isnโ€™t all about the money. Itโ€™s about helping the next generations of authors able to share their stories with all of us and being open and honest for the entire journey.

Will this new business model work? Time will tell. But wouldnโ€™t it be great if a business could be a success based on altruistic ideals and operational transparency?

Letโ€™s find outโ€”together.โ€

Noisy, crowded, ever in motion, the City can be more than a settingโ€”it can be a character, as nuanced and as fickle as a human being, with as many traits and quirks as the best mapped out characters. is an anthology that takes place in different cities around the world during the bleakโ€”sometimes harshโ€”season of winter. Your story submission must conform to the guidelines listed below and feature the Cityโ€”in fact, the title of each story will be the City of which you write.

We are not looking for vampire/werewolf love trysts. We are looking for fantastical elements within the City itself.

Because we all knowโ€”deep in our heartsโ€”that nightmares and fairies, monsters and ghosts, and terrors of the real and imagined call the City their home.

โ–ช๏ธ In this case, a โ€œcityโ€ should be considered a large population center (over 200,000 permanent inhabitants).

๐Ÿค– STATEMENT ON AI GENERATED ART ๐Ÿค–

Fans and followers of the new House of Gamut, thank you for making our first day of submissions incredibly successful. As with all things, nothing ever goes as perfect as we would have liked.

A fan noted that one piece of art that we had purchased via a stock art company was AI generated. We are currently scrubbing our campaigns and rechecking all of our purchased art now and will remove any AI generated pieces.

We at House of Gamut believe that artwork of any kindโ€”whether visual or writtenโ€”should be human generated. While use of computers as a tool to assist with art is acceptable (a word processor to write a story, for example), we feel that art is an extension of human emotions, feelings, and experiences that are uniquely created by we flawed creatures.

AI generated art will not be accepted at House of Gamut. We made a mistake, proving that we are indeed a part of flawed humanity, we are correcting this mistake, and we will also be taking steps to catch this sort of thing before it ever appears in our ads, magazine, or other media.

The fault for this issue lies with me, and no one else. And I will take steps to not repeat this mistake again.

Fondest regards,

Richard B. Wood

๐Ÿ“š Through our publishing house and online magazine, our team is dedicated to sharing bewitching and captivating dark speculative stories that shall enrapture your senses and ensnare your minds.

โœ’๏ธ Weโ€™re also proud to support writers through all stages of their careers. With courses crafted to inspire, educate, and elevate, HOUSE OF GAMUT shall be your steadfast companion as you navigate the treacherous waters of a writer's voyage.

Furthermore, diversity, equity, and inclusion aren't just words here; they're the foundation, the beating heart โค๏ธ of House of Gamut's mission. Our goal is to shine a light on voices that have been relegated to the shadows, to uplift and amplify those who've been marginalized.

We hope ALL lovers of dark speculative fiction will join us at the House of Gamutโ€”a beacon of learning, a haven for creativity, and a vessel of transformation.
