Not going to sugarcoat it for you — this is very bad. Millions of Americans will be impacted by Congress defunding public media, and especially by the decision to claw back already appropriated funding. Today marks the 5th anniversary of the passing of civil rights leader and Congressman John Lewis. He played a pivotal role in both the 1963 March on Washington and the Selma to Montgomery marches, and was the founder of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He later served as a U.S. Representative for Georgia's 5th congressional district for 33 years.

His passion for justice is remembered in this powerful episode of GBH's Arthur, in which he teaches Arthur that a person with conviction can change the world.

Devin Speak served in the U.S. Coast Guard. Jeff Dean did two tours in Iraq. When they left the military, they were both interested in finding that same sense of mission and meaning. So they looked to journalism. It was a struggle... until an NPR internship program came around.

"There is nothing like NPR. If it is weakened, nothing will replace it. Every community will lose, whether their station pulls back on local coverage, suspends certain services or closes altogether. Stories will go untold and, with fewer jobs and resources available, it will be far less likely that people like us will be able to keep serving the American public."

PBS President & CEO Paula Kerger: "For (PBS), the amount of money that we would lose would be significant, but if you're sitting in a small community and 40% of your budget is the federal support, you probably can't make that up. This is actually why we fight so hard to try to hold onto that funding."
