The night skies were alive last night thanks to a G4 geomagnetic storm, with a Kp index that hit 9, one of the highest levels on record. While the magnetic field is under extreme stress, many in the northern hemisphere are reaping the reward and left feeling awestruck by its beauty.

These pictures are taken at 8,500 feet above Colorado Springs, CO. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐬𝐨 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐫𝐞𝐝? Typically, auroras glow in shades of green — but at high altitudes, the atmosphere is thinner and contains more oxygen atoms at higher levels. When these upper layers of oxygen interact with solar particles, they emit red light rather than green.
