MidLife Crisis Music Therapy Adventures

MidLife Crisis Music Therapy Adventures Midlife Crisis prompts a return to music therapy school, which leads to nothing short of a mental health breakthrough. In other words, I'm doin' it all.

Would you like tequila or vodka with your lemonade? First I had a midlife crisis, then I wanted to write an operetta about my frontier family, and then I went to music therapy school.

#17...i am truly grateful for the knowledge of how music works in the body and brain. neurology is the "best since sliced bread!" oh, and i'm most grateful for the increasing understanding of functional neurological disorders.

PEOPLE!...i keep seeing that meme about getting someone to talk about themselves by asking "what the hell is wrong with you?!?" and it's GASLIGHTING 101.

i do it, you do it, we all do it.

let's read, learn, and do the work to "be the change you want to see in the world" MGhandi.

Gaslighting involves intentionally distorting the truth in order to manipulate another person to think, feel, or behave in a certain way. Gaslighters aim to get a person to doubt themselves and to not trust their own perceptions, making them easier to control and persuade.

after recovering from burnout, i decided to become a music therapist, and i've never been happier with my work. i get to work with so many wonderful people, families, from all walks of life. on top of that, i am a neurologic music therapist and researcher. i'm 54 and hope to enjoy my work until my last breath.

what did you do with your midlife crisis?
can you create a career for yourself that you love so much you don't want to retire from it?

things are weighty...the violence in my neighborhood, continuous reminders in the news, thousands of people driving past the store memorial, and conversations in the community on next door app...it's only the beginning of processing it all.
how does music comfort us?
on a neuro level: the tempo tells my heart to slow down and my breaths to elongate and sigh. the lyrics are a prayer for mercy in a difficult time. it calms the body to allow a release of tears and emotions, aiding self-regulation. i'm gonna sing along, changes our bodies the same way. love this song.
what songs do you turn to when you need comfort? what's your song of peace?

Quote of the Week: "Try not to take your neuro-biological conditioning too personally." says the woman who's going to help me RE. WIRE. MY. BRAIN!
Dr. Elizabeth Stanley...very excited to be working with her this year.

Life is certainly an adventure, and the study of neuro music therapy has made it even more remarkable.
