first race recap ๐โโ๏ธ
This Memorial Day race is the 2nd largest 10K in the world with approx. 54,000 runners ๐ฎ when we moved to Boulder this year, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to sign up & experience the hype!
I figured my training from my half in April would help me build a base for this race. I didnโt end up being as consistent as I hoped in training for the half, and a couple out of state trips in May with no running left me wondering if I was actually prepared. Thankfully I had been doing cross training (hikes, walks, & some lifting & bike rides) along with some running.
I went into the race planning to see how I felt & go from there. I didnโt feel nervous at the start line because I knew the course would be a lot of fun anyway if I just ran it for the vibes. But I tend to run better in cold weather, and thankfully it was a 50 degree overcast day!
I decided Iโd break the race into three 2-mile segments & go all out the last 0.2. I tried to run the first 2 miles around 10:05 (of course I went out a little fast the first mile), the second 2 around 10:00 (my goal), & use whatever was left in the tank to run the last 2 faster than 10:00.
My splits ended up being:
Mile 1 - 9:52
Mile 2 - 10:04
Mile 3 - 10:04
Mile 4 - 9:58
Mile 5 - 9:37
Mile 6 - 9:58
Overall, I ended the race with a 9:56/mi pace for an official race time of 1:01:42. My watch tracked the race a little long at 6.31 miles & a time of 1:00:48 for the 10K.
Either way, itโs a new 10K PR for me ๐ I hadnโt broken my old PR of 1:03:15 since March 2022!
Iโve learned from my races this year that Iโm performing better on race days with lower running mileage, more cross training, & my sped up pop songs playlist ๐ and even though I often feel slow running in Boulder, itโs ultimately making me a stronger runner!
Up next? Trail Colorado next week - my first trail race ๐๏ธ I have no specific goals for this other than to finish it & have fun!
P.S. I normally donโt write race recaps like this so let me know if you read & enjoyed this ๐๐
