Millennium Mixtape from KGNU DJ Chewy!

Chewy says: “In no particular order, a crude snapshot of my memory. This is not a painstaking study. I had to simply go with the first albums that came to mind. The more I thought about it, the more complicated it got, so I stopped thinking and captured a list before I became consumed.”

Millennium Mixtape from KGNU DJ Hannah Taub!

Hannah says: “These albums are listed in the order that I thought of them. The 2010s are heavily covered, as are the last few years, but I tried to find some earlier albums as well. All of these were chosen because I loved them when I first heard them, and still love to listen to them now. Pretty much all indie rock, with a smattering of folk, Americana and pop. Enjoy!”

Millennium Mixtape from KGNU DJ Jessica Numbers!

Jessica Numbers says: “By the time I realized I had misunderstood this request, it was too late and I was committed. So, instead of providing a list of my top 25 albums from the past 25 years, I have provided a list of my top album by year from 2000-2024 :)-. To me, top is not necessarily the best album to have come out that year (although it can be)...it is the album that I truly listened to the most that year, or that helped me survive that time period, or that made me cry or dance the most (or both, at the same time), or that soundtracks my most profound and poignant memories during that year of my life. Within each year, there are many, many more favorites. But these albums are the ones I have on vinyl, the ones I request to be buried with me when I go - for they are as much a part of me as my very bones. Music = life.

Millennium Mixtape from KGNU DJ Toph!

DJ Toph says: “Putting together this list was a surprisingly introspective exercise. I was born in 1993, always most interested in newer music, and didn’t really learn to search for music more off the beaten path until my college years (2012-16). So for all intents and purposes, this isn’t just my top 25 albums of the millennium, but also the top 25 albums of my life.

As I sifted through my old playlists, concert list, and memory, it became clear to me that the albums that stood out as worthy for inclusion in my mind weren’t necessarily those that are the most critically acclaimed or technically impressive, but rather those that are full of songs that I keep coming back to because they transport me to a specific time, place, moment, thought, or feeling. The serenity of a Spring night’s sunset on the porch with friends and War on Drugs on in the background. Sweaty Summer runs during the anxious unknown of a Pandemic with Parannoul and Modern Baseball blasting through the headphones. And the calming blanket of Justin Vernon’s falsetto on a night in bed where insomnia has once again taken hold.

It’s these moments and connections that in my mind keeps us music lovers coming back, over and over, looking for that next album or song that’ll create another notch in the timeline of our lives. And I’m excited to think about what more the next 25 years of music will bring, and new memories it’ll create!”

Singer-songwriter Liz Barnez stopped by the KGNU studios to celebrate the release of her long-awaited new album Wholehearted. In conversation with DJ Meredith Carson, Liz shared stories behind the record’s eight-year creation, including collaborations with members of The Subdudes, Bonnie and Taylor Sims, John Macy, and a circle of family voices woven into the autobiographical title track. She also discussed the inspiration behind “Snow on the Bayou,” reflecting on the changing climate and her New Orleans roots. Liz spoke about the vibrant Fort Collins music community, her work with FoCoMA, and the efforts underway to strengthen connections among Front Range musicians. The interview features live discussion, humor, local music history, and a warm look at the creative collaborations that shaped Wholehearted. (November 21, 2025). Listen at kgnu.org
