Fireworks enthusiasts have already been lighting up the sky ahead of July 4, and that has some urging the public to have more compassion for those living with PTSD.

Staunton’s Elk Falls Trail 🌊🦌

Just a final 0.8 miles—but a shift.
The air thickens with pine and water.
Every footstep sounds closer to something louder, wilder, and more alive.

🌊 From Elk Falls Pond to the waterfall:
• Steep switchbacks
• Forest quiet turning into waterfall thunder
• Mist you can feel before you see it

🥾 Favorite Full Route:
Scout Line → Marmot Passage → Elk Falls Pond → Chimney Rock → Elk Falls Trail
~12 mi RT · ≈ 1.7 k ft gain · allow 5-6 hrs

🚶‍♂️Fastest & Easiest Route:
Staunton Ranch → Bugling Elk → Chimney Rock → Elk Falls Trail
~10.9 mi RT · ≈ 1.3 k ft gain · allow 4–5 hrs

Elk Falls in two moods before and after a brief summer rain shower 🦌🌦️

🥾Favorite Route:
Scout Line → Marmot Passage → Elk Falls Pond → Chimney Rock → Elk Falls Trail
~12 mi RT · ≈ 1.7 k ft gain · allow 5-6 hrs

🚗 45 minute drive from Denver off of US-285 in the Pine Junction Area

🧭 Pro Tips:
• Hit the trail at opening (6 am) to beat weekend crowds. Weekdays are perfectly uncrowded.
• Scout Line’s switchbacks give early panoramic shots — perfect 360° lookouts.
• Marmot Passage is mostly shaded: a cool place to record voice-overs and light filtering through the trees photos.
• From Elk Falls Pond the final 0.8 mi is steep, rocky, and hiker-only
• Have a lens cloth; the 75-ft plume loves to mist camera lenses!

🧠 Sensory-Friendly Tip;
Scout Line and Marmot Passage offer natural “reset zones.”
Wide switchbacks, filtered light, and the sound of wind in the trees make these ideal rest stops if you need to decompress from sensory overload.

📍 —may be Colorado’s newest—but is one of our best hidden gems for a mix of alpine forest, big views, & peaceful solitude.

Wind turbines spin. Raptors circle. The sun spills fire behind the Buttes. If you’re looking for solitude, sunset, and space to breathe—this trail delivers.🌅🌾

Less noise. More sky. A trail that lets your thoughts breathe.

🥾 The Pawnee Buttes Trail is a must for the sensory seeker or ADHD traveler craving grounding and grandeur.

🦅 Heads Up: Portions of the trail are seasonally closed (Mar 1–Jun 30) to protect nesting raptors.
Respect their home—so they’ll keep soaring above ours.

✅ What’s open now:
• Main trail to West Butte (2.1 miles)

❌ What’s closed until July 1:
• Overlook Trail
• Lips Bluff Trail

🏕️ Best nearby campsite? Crow Valley Recreation Area.

🎧 Sensory travel tip: That wind? It howls. Bring earplugs for peace in motion.
