Product Review: What we really think of the new Scott GT…

Everyone knows I lean favorably toward Scott fly rods. I called the Radian the greatest fly rod ever made in a Field & Stream review many years ago. I felt that Centric was worthy of a comparison to AC/DC’s “Back in Black” album. I fish Sector in the salt, and consider Session the best dollar-for-dollar value on the fly rod market today.

So, what the heck do you expect me to say about the new “GT” series?

Yes, I love it. And yes, I highly recommend it. But maybe not for just anyone.

For the record, “G” series goes way back to the roots of the Scott Fly Rod Company. Back in the 1970s, founder Harry Wilson (he named the company after his son) produced a medium-action graphite rod with hollow internal ferrules that stood apart from the field. He called it the “G” (for graphite, as the “F” series were made of fiberglass). I like to think that, while the rod naming wasn’t exactly innovative, the design was. Indeed, it set a standard for feel and responsiveness and gathered a cult following amongst certain casters.

It took bold moves to improve upon G. But after 30 years, “G2” was launched in 2006. To be honest, I wasn’t enamored with G2. The company itself sought better with the launch of a new “G” in 2017, and that series has lived up to its billing, especially for certain applications like dry fly fishing in technically demanding water. Some models like the 8-foot-8-inch 4-weight stand apart, and if you have one, it’s a keeper.

I was actually a bit skeptical when GT arrived a couple months ago. But ...continue reading at the URL below

Angling Trade Survey: Black Friday’s Coming… Who Cares?

1. Black Friday sales are hugely important for us, as much or more than ever.
2. Black Friday sales are important, but not what they used to be.
3. Black Friday is fine, but Cyber Monday is a bigger deal for us.
4. We don’t do a lot around the holidays; not when compared with fishing products in the fishing season.
5. Total crapshoot… some years yes, some years not so much.

Release Mortality Update!

COMPREHENSIVE SCIENCE FROM MASS DMF SHOWS RELEASE MORTALITY IS ROUGHLY HALF OF HISTORICAL RATE

This has major implications for striped bass management.

For 30 years, managers have used a 9% “release mortality” rate for striped bass — a number pulled from a 1990s study that even its author said shouldn’t guide management. Now, new research from Massachusetts DMF is set to change everything. Using telemetry tags and data from over 8,000 fish, this comprehensive research finds that release mortality is closer to 4–5%, and under 2% for anglers fishing single hook artificials or flies.

That means responsible catch-and-release anglers — the same ones who’ve been vilified for “playing with fish” — aren’t the core of the problem. Our community held the line valiantly. Now, we finally have what may be the most comprehensive release-mortality research ever done for a saltwater species, and it tells a very different story.

So, where does that leave us?

From American Saltwater Guides Association:

We Need Your Support!

SIGN THE OFFICIAL ASGA LETTER CALLING FOR MAJOR REDUCTIONS TO MENHADEN HARVEST

The “most important fish in the sea” just exposed one of the biggest management failures in decades.

A new assessment shows Atlantic menhaden natural mortality was inaccurately estimated for years, causing quotas set over 275 million pounds too high. A significant, immediate reduction is necessary to align with science-driven management and right the course of a critical forage fish. The Atlantic fishery needs to “take the cut”, and the industrial reduction fleet needs to front a majority of that reduction. We can no longer accept half the coastwide catch being taken from the Chesapeake Bay. The Gulf fishery lacks a quota. It is shocking that an industrial operation of this scale has no upper limit in 2025. This can no longer be true, and buffer zones need to be enforced (and expanded) going forward.

The fallout of upcoming meetings could reshape both the Atlantic and Gulf fisheries — and what happens next is up to us.

New Website Details Harmful Effects of Salmon Farming Practices from Evidence-Based Research

Salmon.info draws on over 300 peer-reviewed studies and reports to detail the downside of salmon farming.

The Atlantic Salmon Federation and the North Atlantic Salmon Fund are proud to announce the launch of salmon.info, a comprehensive evidence-based resource for media professionals, policymakers, and conservationists about the harmful effects of the salmon farming practices that produce one of the world’s most consumed fish.

“The salmon farming industry claims to be one of the most sustainable proteins on the planet with minimal environmental impact,” said Neville Crabbe, executive director of communications at the Atlantic Salmon Federation. “Our goal for salmon.info is to provide accurate, accessible information on things the salmon farming industry doesn’t talk about so that consumers who are eating farmed salmon are informed.”

For example, it takes more than one kilogram of wild caught fish to grow one kilogram of farmed Atlantic salmon, and tens of millions of farmed fish die prematurely in sea cages every year – a staggering waste of animal life and resources. There are severe consequences from sea-cage salmon farms on other species, especially wild Atlantic salmon.

Key features of salmon.info include: ...continue reading at the URL below

Down the Path Podcast Releases New Episode

If you have been a fan of any of the Down The Path podcast series over the last few years, a new episode was just released and is available wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts. Down the Path Season 3, Episode 7 continues the story of the mysterious disappearance of Stanley Bain from South Andros Island in the Bahamas.

Down the Path is a narrative true-crime style podcast created and hosted by freelance journalist Will Rice. The show explores unsolved cases, mysteries, and disappearances connected to fly fishing and travel destinations around the world, often weaving together first hand reporting, recorded interviews, police reports and other archival material.

One of its central stories is “The Disappearance of Stanley Bain,” a multi-part investigation into the 1995 disappearance of Bahamian fly fishing lodge owner and businessman Stanley Bain and four other men who went missing during an expedition in the remote waters of South Andros Island in the Bahamas. The series looks at what is known about the trip, the unanswered questions, theories about what might have happened, and the impact of the disappearance on Bain’s family and the fly fishing community.

The Disappearance of Stanley Bain was first released in January 2023, and this is the first major update since then. In this chapter, host Will Rice devotes an entire episode to an interview with ...continue reading at the URL below

Tariffs prompt price hikes for fishing flies…

There may never be a better time to tie your own flies than right now.

That’s because Trump tariffs are taking effect, and as a result, imported fly-fishing product prices are going up. The shock effect is really being noticed when it comes to flies, and the first to take notice have been fly shops making their preseason orders.

The thing is, because the fly manufacturers source their flies from different countries (all flies are tied by people, not machines, and the vast majority are imported from countries where labor costs are quite low) the tariff rates vary. On top of that, different companies are approaching the tariffs differently—some are eating more of the cost while others are passing them through to customers (shops).

Angling Trade has heard from a number of pissed-off dealers, and most of the finger pointing is aimed at Umpqua Feather Merchants. Umpqua says it is subject to a 20% tariff and is passing along 12% (60% of the incurred expense) of that via price hikes. Another company that sources from the same country is passing through 8% (40% of the new expense). Fly manufacturers that source from other countries may be subject to lower tariff rates, thus a company that passes along 50% of a 10% tariff ends up hiking prices by significantly less.

The net result is that dealers are being asked to ...continue reading at the URL below

School of Trout (Tao of Trout) Starts Next Week

Tim Romano and I will both be taking part in the “School of Trout” next week on the Henry’s Fork in Idaho. Granted, you could call the Henry’s Fork itself the School of Trout, because it’s easy to get taught a lesson or two there by the fish, whenever you visit. But I’m talking about Todd Tanner’s School of Trout, which is brilliant in concept and an important example on a number of levels.

Assemble a team of career guides, authors, artists, and others who live and breathe fly fishing for a living. Invite a limited number of “students” to spend the week with them, absorbing all they can, and spending a bit of time on the water together. And when they “graduate” after a week, hopefully these aspiring anglers increase their grasp and appreciation for the sport exponentially.

We’ve been taking part for several years now, and it’s become the highlight of our year, because 1) the instructors inevitably ...continue reading at the URL below

Angling Trade Survey

How important is teaching things like technique and conservation in the context of a guide trip?

1. Extremely important. If someone pays for a guide trip and doesn’t learn anything new, they got ripped off.
2. Not so important. It’s about catching fish, and that’s it.
3. It’s important teach them enough to be able to catch fish, after that, whatever happens happens.
4. Depends on the client and what they want.
5. No opinion.
