It’s not schtick. Bertha, almost certainly the world’s first and only drag queen Grateful Dead cover band, is the real deal. They’re in the upper echelon of Dead tribute bands when it comes to well-honed musical chops. And so much fun to watch! But make no mistake, this is serious stuff.

Bertha, the drag queen Grateful Dead tribute band, brings music, activism, and fundraising to the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco.

Tonight, I’m headed to Pilsen—not the Pilsen of the Czech Republic, but Chicago’s Lower West Side, specifically Thalia Hall. Built by Czech immigrants and modeled after a Prague opera house, it sits like a time capsule—familiar yet evolving. The perfect setting for a bill like Them Coulee Boys and Kitchen Dwellers: bluegrass roots, but not your grandfather’s bluegrass. When people hear “bluegrass,” they think Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs. And sure, I’d love to hear Søren Staff belt out “Uncle Pen,” or watch Torrin Daniels tear through “Foggy Mountain Breakdown.” But that’s not what this is. This is bluegrass electric—modern, emotional, high-octane.

The Southern jam-rock titan Widespread Panic returned to the iconic Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY on November 21, 2025 — marking only the sixth appearance of their prolific career at the storied venue. They kicked off the first night of their second three-show run inside the intimate eighteen-hundred-capacity Westchester theatre, playing to a completely sold-out crowd.

Fans traveled from nearly everywhere — forty-nine of fifty U.S. states were represented in ticket sales, along with attendees from Canada and the UK. Panic responded in full force, delivering an electrifying mix of classics, deep-cut favorites, new material, and thoughtful covers. Throughout the evening, the band also paid tribute to former bandmate Todd Nance, poet-songwriter Todd Snider, and Daniel Hutchens of Bloodkin — honoring past voices while driving the night forward with full-tilt energy.

Wednesday night — just about six minutes before Dogs were due to appear on stage — I looked down to make sure all of my camera equipment was in place, and when I looked up, a mob of onlookers had appeared in the pit as if out of the air itself. Then the lights went down. As they all took their places on stage, keyboardist Jeremy Kaplan got on the mic to express — regretfully — that it was the final week of the band’s three-week Chicago run. But to shift into the music on a high note, he also expressed their collective adoration for the city, assuring everyone that they WILL be back. With that, the band began to play.

Dogs In A Pile close out a three-week residency at Garcia’s Chicago with two electric nights, a full album performance of Distroid, and a crowd in full voice.

The historic Lobero Theatre, with its Spanish-colonial bones and warm amber glow, has long been one of Santa Barbara’s most intimate musical sanctuaries. On November 18th, those century-old beams and perfectly tuned acoustics hosted a double bill that traced the entire arc of American roots music — Robert Jon & The Wreck setting the stage, and Samantha Fish delivering a headliner that pushed the room to its limits. The usually reserved Lobero crowd was anything but tame. This was a night of raised pulses, roaring solos, and guitars sharp enough to peel paint.

Samantha Fish lights up the Lobero Theatre with a fierce modern blues set, following a vintage-fueled opener from Robert Jon & The Wreck in Santa Barbara.

Colorado knows how to do post-holiday shows: warm midsize listening rooms, fresh snow outside, and a crowd full of chosen family. With Silas Herman & the Tone Unit on Friday and Eli Emmitt Band on Saturday, it’s set to be a hearth full of Salmon in the heart. With so much of the extended musical family living nearby, there’s no telling who might show up.

The mayor shows up when the mayor shows up.

Silas Herman & the Tone Unit join Leftover Salmon for a Thanksgiving tradition at the Boulder Theatre, bringing family, mashgrass, and musical magic.

Berkeley’s beloved community hub Ashkenaz has long stood as one of the Bay Area’s most welcoming all-ages spaces for roots music, dance nights, and cultural celebration. And while the Grateful Dead–leaning shows always draw special love around here — especially with December stacked full of Dead tributes and extended Mars Hotel runs — the venue’s full late-November and December calendar is a rich tapestry of bluegrass, Latin dance, Balkan folk traditions, singer-songwriters, and global sounds.

Ashkenaz rolls out a packed late-fall and holiday lineup in Berkeley with Grateful Dead nights, bluegrass jams, Latin dance parties, and global music events.
