Blackout poetry is my absolute favorite way to drop into my feelings and see what’s percolating underneath them.

Creating this one helped me express the subtle, manipulative language that high-control religious groups or cults use to reel us on.

Language that love bombed us so that we felt special, chosen, or “exceedingly rare.”

Language full of (seemingly) intelligent and hyper-spiritual jargon that encouraged us to give everything we are to their “movement.”

Language that brought us to our knees, keeping us submissive to a system that always required us to be small.

Doing a simple practice like this is a great way to compassionately engage with the younger-you who was part of these communities. Because so often while we’re in it, the harm that’s actually taking place gets suppressed underneath it all.

But when we get quiet, bring our younger selves to mind, and ask her, “what do you want me to know about what it was really like,” we get to validate her. We get to listen and make her feel seen, maybe for the very first time. And sometimes that’s all she needs to alchemize the pain and move forward. ‪❤︎‬

Note: Contrary to the label, this was NOT made with AI. I colored the blackout poetry myself in a real live book, and the other text is my actual handwriting.

If you need me, I’ll be crying with my inner child about Hilary Duff 🥲

I never thought a 5 minute journaling exercise would change my entire life.

I wasn’t a therapist. I wasn’t a researcher. I was just a religious cult survivor who was desperately trying to get rid of this nagging anxiety, fear, and dread.

When I finally started to get curious about where those really came from, with pen and paper, something started to shift in a major way.

I was able to see how my religious cults doctrine of end times theology deeply shaped my sense of self and time. Even though I’d stopped believing in their ideas a while ago, the remnants were still there all the time.

But one journaling prompt at a time, the ticking clock started to get quieter and quieter.

If you’re stuck in that same urgency, or were taught end-times theology at any point in your life, I have something that I think can help you finally untangle from it. Just comment “UNTANGLE” and I’ll send it your way. 🫶🏼
