A special invitation to guitar students, teachers and local musicians:

Sunday night’s Great American Songbook will demonstrate the many ways a guitar can serve the music—keeping time, supplying harmony, answering a vocal phrase, creating an atmosphere and stepping forward for a memorable solo.

Whether you play jazz, blues, rock, country or popular music, there is something to learn from hearing how these outstanding guitarists listen, respond and accompany.

Pay attention to what they play—and just as importantly, what they choose not to play.

When you hear a great guitarist, what catches your attention first—the solo or the way the guitar supports the singer?

This Sunday’s Great American Songbook will explore both sides of the instrument: guitarists stepping into the spotlight and guitarists quietly providing the rhythm, harmony and accompaniment that make a recording complete.

Who is one guitarist whose playing always makes you stop and listen?

This Sunday, The Great American Songbook has strings attached.

Throughout the history of American popular music, the guitar has played many roles. It can provide the rhythm, support a singer, fill the spaces between phrases or step forward with an unforgettable solo.

Sunday night, we’ll listen closely to Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Freddie Green, Oscar Moore, B.B. King, John Mayer and other remarkable guitarists. You’ll also hear the guitar accompanying great singers, including Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett and Nat King Cole.

Sometimes the guitar will command the spotlight. At other times, its greatest contribution will be how beautifully it serves the song.

Great songs. Great singers. Listen for the guitar.

Tomorrow night’s Great American Songbook is built around a simple idea:

If you had to choose 28 Tony Bennett recordings that really help tell his story, which ones would they be?

That’s what I’ll be exploring Sunday night from 7–9 PM Central.

Small fact: Tony Bennett’s signature song, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” won the Grammy for Record of the Year in 1963.

I hope you’ll spend part of your Sunday evening with me.
