Mother Nature on display again … she always amazes!

The sheer grit of a palo verde planting itself in the middle of rock and surviving (check out those roots in the bottom 1/3 of the picture 😳), a castle built by 🤷🏻‍♀️… amazing, and a capital E randomly displayed … so cool…right place right time.
👏🏻
Just a few things we saw on our 155 km trek through the wilds of Arizona’s Black Mesa.

Always inspiring!

The big dawgs were on the race course today. Several different classes of trucks pitted themselves against the desert and each other in the “Unlimited” race. For many, the desert won. Attrition was high with only eleven of twenty eight competitors completing the full 3-lap, 400+ mile race.

On their third lap, the #274 truck driven by Shane Lewis experienced electrical problems and had to pull over at our checkpoint to attempt repairs. We couldn’t believe how chill these guys were, chatting and joking with us as they worked through the problem.

At one point one of the guys had to basically go head first into the co-driver’s side of the truck and work upside down under the dash to access the problem area. Looked a bit funny but ya gotta do what ya gotta do when time is ticking away and you’re not moving.

Super friendly guys. They thanked us for helping out with the race before heading back out onto the course.

We had a lot of fun working the race - so much so that we’ve already agreed to volunteer again next year.

Well, day 1 of the is in the books. It was a long day but a busy day running one of the checkpoints along the race course.

Our job was to keep track of the cars as they went by, recording their number and the time that they passed. It took both of us to make that happen ‘cause they were going by at 90+ mph and the numbers are fairly small.

When the sun went down we had to strategically aim our side-by-side so that we could use the light bar to illuminate the side of the cars but not blind the drivers.

The temperature dropped considerably when the sun went down - normal for the desert - but we brought extra layers to put on so we were fine.

Speaking of the sunset, it was spectacular as usual but the way the dust seemed to cling to the ground like fog added to the beauty.

We are looking forward to being back out there again tomorrow for the Unlimited classes.

We are volunteering at the Parker 400 off road desert race this weekend. Had a great time in Parker today attending the tech inspections and checking out the multitude of vendors. Racing starts tomorrow.

One of the things we love the most about off road adventures is all the unique and interesting things you find in the middle of nowhere.
On today’s adventure we happened upon a coyote that was sleeping on one of the trails. We startled him awake as we drove up and he casually moved off to the side into a wash. He stared at us a bit and then I guess decided we weren’t a big threat so he laid back down. Pretty cool seeing him so close.
Next we happened upon an old stone structure that at first we figured to be a dilapidated cabin but upon closer inspection appeared to possibly be some sort of kiln. It was lined with fire brick which you can see in one of the shots.

We love hiking in the Arizona desert. You can pretty much pick a direction and just go. You have to navigate through washes along the way but for the most part they are not a hindrance and don’t require large detours.

So that’s what we did yesterday. We’ve been seeing the mountain in the first pic through our trailer windows for days now so we decided to walk to it.

Turns out the base of the mountain was 4km (2.5mi) away. Once we got to it we decided to climb part way up.

Along the way we discovered some old mining pits, and also a couple of dams in a wash that were probably built by miners in days gone by to collect and store water.

We also found a mine on the side of the mountain and a delapidated old shack with a steel bar door on it that we figure might have been used to store explosives.

There was a terrific view of the valley from the mountain and we actually managed to see where our trailer is parked.

Fun hike.

We stopped at the Founders Cabin on the AZPT on our way into Lake Havasu City. I’m not sure of the history of the cabin but the walls were filled photo collages, dollar bills from around the world (even a dollar coin from Canada), skulls and rusty things (heaven for me) and some very unique artwork created from discarded metal scrap. A very cool place to explore!

The ravages of the Arizona Peace Trail took its toll on our rigs!
🌵
A homemade light bar bracket on our SxS was no match for the bumps on the trail. The 1/4” plate steel fatigued and failed completely from the constant motion over many miles. We did an on trail repair using t-shirts for cushioning, electrical tape and lots of tie wraps to get us to Ehrenberg where Julio from Weld Shop fixed us up at 7:30 am! Awesome service!
🌵
The second failure was on our travelling companions ATV. A weld at a brace on a homemade aluminum rack broke causing complete failure. Another on trail dismantle and lots of straps and we were under way leaving nothing behind.

Day 3 of the Arizona Peace Trail done! Our first opportunity to shower and sleep on a soft mattress in 3 days, our first non mechanical failure of the trip, and some cool (and strange) things we encountered on the way.
🌵
Our home made light bar mount fatigued from the ravages of the AZPT. We used T shirts, electrical tape, and lots of zip ties to get us through to our destination. Fortunately there was a weld shop right next to the RV park who got us in at 7:30 am for a quick repair. A shoutout to Julio at Weld Shop in Ehrenberg! Great job!
🌵
We travelled from our wilderness camp spot north of Fishers Landing through Quartzite to our rented cabin in the Arizona Oasis RV Park in Ehrenberg, AZ. The cabin sleeps 10 and while the cabins don’t have running water, there are very clean bathrooms with hot showers close by as well as a coffee maker, a toaster, a microwave, and a BBQ, all reserved for those using the cabins or tent camping.
🌵
We came across the remains of the Cibola Cabin, a “dog trot” cabin built in 1910 and some very strange target practice items just on the edge of the Yuma Proving Grounds😳

Day 2 in the books! We rode 125 miles through Yuma and then north over the most amazing fins / razerbacks / ridges in an area called the Laguna Mountains. Not for the faint of heart for sure but absolutely stunning - 9 miles of ridge riding, twists and turns, ups and downs - all narrow single lane but 2 way traffic😳. It’s the Zion NP Angels Landing for OHVs.
🔹
We arrived at our wilderness camp spot north of Fishers Landing after dark and listened to coyotes and burros as we set up. Another chilly night but a beautiful view when we awoke. As Dave made our breakfast we discovered we’d spent the night beside an old gravesite. We have no information about it but the 18 graves were decorated with flowers.

We made it through day 1 day and night👏🏻
🌵
Pic 1 is our set up for the night. We followed an old trail a few hundred yards up a wash and set up camp on some nice flat rocks😂. Pic 2 is sunrise and pic 3 is me trying to warm my frozen feet in the morning. It was a chilly 43 F (6 C) overnight but it warmed up quickly when the sun came up. A successful and enjoyable day 1! On to day 2.

Day 1 morning break. We hit the road at 8 am sharp travelling the AZPT from Salome towards Dateland where we’ll look for a spot to wilderness camp off the trail for the night. We hope to cover 200 km (132 miles). We have jerky, dried fruits & nuts, and granola bars for lunch and dehydrated food packages for dinner. Fingers crossed for a safe day 1.
