The Obstacle of a Bowdon Merchant

The Obstacle of a Bowdon Merchant I have been informed the City Council is taking actions which will dissolve this huge community event at Smokin Pig, please help me stand!

Good morning! I wanted to make an updated post then I will make this page inactive. Thank you all for your support and interest in the topics that were at hand. After last nights council work session and meeting this morning with interim City Manager Jan Gibbs and Mayor Randy Saxon the car cruise will continue at the Smokin Pig as has years past. Follow us Bowdon Cruise-In at the Smokin' Pig Restaurant for reminders of up coming car cruise dates and entertainment. Thank you to the council members who spoke on the topic last night along with all the community who came with an interest! I am thankful we have all came together for the purpose of continuing to see Bowdon thrive. I look forward to the development of Watts Park and what it holds for the future of Bowdon.

I want to publicly say that while I appreciate everyone’s support I do not condone the disrespectful behavior of name calling that is being done from some of the individuals stating their personal feelings. This is not under my control and has no reflection of me, my family, The Smokin Pig or car cruise. I never brought this matter to bring shame or disrespect to anyone or the city it was only to bring awareness to all involved and our community. I will not post anything else on the matter, I will see you all on Tuesday to what sounds like will be a good productive outcome. Have a blessed weekend.

I would like to thank the Mayor Randy Saxon and his support stating he didn’t have a problem with the car cruise and honesty it had never generated any complaints and Interim City Manager Jan Gibbs for her time when I reached out to them both for the details on the matter at hand and providing me with direction of having it placed on the upcoming work session before the council next Tuesday at 7:00 at the City Hall then the following week for City Council Meeting. Then I would also like to thank Councilman Wes McEntyre for taking the initiative to reach out to me and discuss the matter and his stand. I appreciate Wes stating he would be standing with the community on the issue at hand for the car cruise to continue utilizing the park. He further stated his stand against the fence and parking on the grass for the cruise which was both a positive stand. Wes was not in agreement of spending money for a fence and stated he had never voted agreed we should have to stay off the grass. Wes McEntyre is 1 of 4 City Council members. Last but certainly not least I would like thank Mr Jimmy Watts for his support in this matter. Mr Watts came up and met with me yesterday at the restaurant and we walked the park discussing the issues at hand and the area currently being used for employee parking where the property line was split along with the green space shaded area where the car cruise takes place in “Watts Park”. Mr Watts and I have very similar visions although his go a little further than mine that one day after the walking trails are developed the car cruise could utilize the whole park pulling off and backing in off the paths of the walking trails creating a nice walking path for the community to walk through the park fellowshipping and looking at the cars, along with craft shows and other community related events. His visions took me back to the old Burwell arts and craft days with all the shade trees, trails and vendors. Mr Watts will not be able to make Tuesdays council meeting due to previous personal appointments in Atlanta late afternoon and with traffic will not be back in time. Although he did go to speak with the Mayor and City Manager to discuss our meeting and his wishes. I’m excited about what the potential holds for this park and our entire town if we all come together for the same goal❤️I look forward to our meeting Tuesday night at the Council to hopefully get to the bottom of the issue at hand with a positive resolution in consideration of the community and all who are involved. I am excited so many of you have expressed your presence and support would be made. See you all Tuesday Night 7:00 Bowdon City Hall Room 132 !
Update I have read a post from Councilman Marty Johnson on his page who is also stating he stands in favor of the community with the car cruise and Watts Park. I am thankful for his support as well.

Good afternoon,
I want to say thank you so much to everyone who is supporting this obstacle. Thank you for joining the page and thank you for sharing to gather more followers. I want to make sure everyone understands 100% I am all for the development of Watts Park. I just feel that it is in the community’s and car cruise members interest to take into consideration on the development to accommodate and consider the thousands of people who has been enjoying the park when it had nothing to offer but a beautiful shaded area to enjoy. Incorporate the plans in such a manner that the 7 times a year the car cruise is held here maybe the families or wives and children could even enjoy the walking trails and picnic tables while still enjoying the car cruise and music being hosted at Smokin Pig. The purpose of this page has never been intended to bash the city or criticize any particular people. Our city works guys they work hard, they do an amazing job. They are over worked and understaffed, we all know people do not want to work now days, but we will help..we have helped in the past and we will help in the future. My mission was to bring awareness to the community at what we had been dealt with, identifying so many more important areas through out the town that had more liability and concerns much more important that us being on someone’s grass and issues that money should be spent on other than a fence on the property line of Smokin Pig that was discussed in July Council Meeting. It is listed in those minutes on this page. I feel I have accomplished my missions thus far by making the community aware and identifying all the issues stated on this page. The City Council Work Session is Tuesday Night,The work session is August 6th at 7:00PM in Room 132 at City Hall.
The council meeting is the following Monday August 12 at 7:00PM. I feel the presence of our community needs to start at the work session to get to the bottom of our issues at hand and efforts of coming together as one to accomplish the development of the park, continuing to make it thrive and incorporating the future of Bowdon Car Cruise in that process. Thank you all again, I have had so many messages, phone calls and emails from merchants, friends, family and just community support in general. Together I pray we can come to a plan that suits what is best for everyone in our town, the Bowdon Car Cruise members, all those who visit all while honoring the Watt’s Family for such a gracious donation to our City by taking pride in the park and making it a beautiful destination for all who come to visit.
Have a blessed and safe weekend and hope everyone enjoys Founders Day

I removed my post regarding the welcome signs after finding out the garden club is who maintains those areas, please accept my apologies. I would like to thank them for volunteering to help try to make Bowdon beautiful. It does appear it would be very helpful if someone or even a couple people could volunteer to help clear out the area around some of the other welcome signs to make them easier and more safe to acces to those who maintain them. I personally will be glad to help maintain one of the signs if one of the garden clubs members ever need help.
Thank you again!

8/1/24 for two days in a row City Park
# 1 Heritage Park, no events going on today or yesterday but the city parking is full cars, City Park # 2 Barr Park, nobody in the park today, no event going on yet cars parked in the City Parking. It’s apparently a ok to park on city property at these parks yet all the sudden it’s not ok to park in Watts Park. I agree the business owners need somewhere to park 100% I have no problem with them and their parking, what I have a problem with is what is good for one park is good for all parks.

I want to make it clear before any miscommunication takes place. I am NOT saying the City maintenance is not doing a good job at what they do. If it is one thing we are blessed with in the City it’s our maintenance men. They have always made the efforts to cut the grass when it was time for the car cruise but they are only a few men with a lot of chores and sometimes timing just wasn’t right so we would pitch it to help. The parks themselves are a full time job for someone if they were maintained properly but grounds maintenance or these parks is by far not their only responsibility, they have the entire City full of duties. I have seen these guys out in the early AM hours after being out all night with busted water lines or trees down from storms and I commend them for the job they do but they can only do so much. With that being said when a local business and family along with the community wants to continue taking care of a park as we have part of Watts Park, take the help where it’s offered and compromise in the development and placement of the trails allowing the car cruise to continue as have the past 7/8 years.

This is an extremely long but informative post for those of you who are asking what in the world is going on…Here is a break down the best way I know how because I like you want to know what in the world is Really going on!
Over the past 7-8 years give or take a few Smokin Pig has hosted the Bowdon Car Cruise. Previously the car cruise was held in town at the Synovus/Wendy’s area. Over the course of this time the car cruise has continued to grow and expand to the point I met with the late Gary Bullock, the City manager at the time and requested his permission to allow over flow parking in the green space also known as Watts Park located behind Smokin Pig. A little background on this park was it was graciously donated to the City many many years ago (way before Smokin Pig and the Car cruise time) by the Watts family with the request being that it one day be developed. Years go by and nothing has been done with the property so the family begins to question why after the gracious donation was their wishes not carried out. It was at this time planning stages began to develop the park which seems to consist of putting gravel walking trails, some benches at a later date and maybe some picnic tables and let’s call it another City Park. They recently installed two beautiful signs at the entrance on McElroy Street and Mitchell Ave identifying the park. In case many of you don’t know we have a park just like this up town (Barr Park) if it were in the budget to maintain could be a beautiful park as could Watts Park.
This car cruise is only held one time a month April-October. When I approached Mr Bullock about the growth of the event he graciously granted permission to utilize the green space as over flow parking for the car cruise and spoke in favor of what the car cruise brought to down town Bowdon as a community. During these conversations Mr Bullock also agreed to allow us to have gravel poured (at our expense) in the back of the restaurant on the small strip up on the rise of our parking lot where our employees parked for the continued use of employee parking. Over the course of this time as cars began using the green space on the north end of the park near Smokin Pig not one time have we ever caused damage. If the grounds were wet from recent rains we even went as far as taping it off with caution tape keeping everyone out of the park so no damage would be done. You could not even tell we had been there after each event except for the fact we always left it better than we found it. Through out these years we have voluntarily kept limbs picked up, trimmed low hanging limbs, rented lifts and trimmed dead limbs, cut the grass if it wasn’t cut before car cruise and not even one time have we ever caused damage. Thousands of people have enjoyed this park with the car cruise being held here at Smokin Pig which is what the goal of a park should be. We should all be in this together but apparently it does not seem to be the case. Fast forward to what brought us here to the current issues. Early in the month of July Bowdon codes enforcement officer came to the Smokin Pig and said “they” sent me to tell you that you needed to get a permit to have the next car cruise…yes sir no problem I will get it before the next event. So July 26th, the day before the event to be held on the 27th we go to obtain the permit. They graciously take our $50 and issue the permit and say by the way you are not allowed to be on the city property anymore for the cruise. Ok so then I immediately go to the mayor and ask what the problem is and where did this come from out of the blue for no apparent legit reasons given. This had not been a problem in 8 years and now all the sudden it is??? Mr Saxon stated it was brought up by council in the meeting and they agreed they did not want us on the grass (which obviously they take no pride in maintaining, just check out the previous post and pictures). Mr Saxon also mentioned the councils intention of a fence being installed on the property line between us and the park but the fence would actually be where the gravel ends instead of on the line allowing us continued use of the parking area that is split by the property line right behind the restaurant at the edge. I expressed my disbelief and disappointment in the city council for wanting to attempt to cause the Bowdon Car Cruise to dissolve. Mr Saxon agreed to put it on the calendar for the next work session and city council meeting in August. I then went and retrieved copies of the previous council meetings and see Mr Bobby Elliot made mention of the fence but no mention was specifically made saying stay off the grass, although the purpose of a fence would clearly be to keep people out. Then I really began to question the situation in my head. Ok what required me to get a permit to hold an event on my own property??? So I call the city and ask if they can point me in the direction for my research of the code on why I had to obtain a permit anyway. I’m told it would be in the municode online under the City of Bowdon. No ma’am it’s not, I’ve already researched those codes…well ok it may be a policy. “Anytime you have an event on City Property you have to obtain a permit”. Ok we will go with that, although I’m not hosting the event in the city park I’m hosting it at Smokin Pig and cars are choosing to park on public property owned by the City because they can’t fit in my parking lot but if a permit is all it is then we will happily give another $50 to the city each month to host the car cruise but here is the kicker…you send codes to tell me I need a permit, I come get a permit no questions asked, you issue me my permit, you graciously take my $50 followed up with by the way your not allowed in the park….excuse me but you just said anytime an event is held on city property a permit is required and you issue me the permit but say stay off the property??!!? So what was I required to get the permit for then?? Make that make sense?? Then it seems after the council has seen how silly they are looking over not wanting us on the grass (they obviously haven’t taken pride in maintaining in the first place) they are shifting gears to oh it’s because of liability… well if it’s liability then identify the liability and let’s fix it, we will help! Don’t destroy something that is good for this community just because you can! Put up signs like you have at the other park up town that says Bowdon City not liable for accidents if it will make you feel better but if we want to talk liability fix all the documented liabilities listed on this page in the other parks and across town don’t try to keep people out of a successful park (Watts Park) that has had thousands of people enjoy it because of what the car cruise has brought to Bowdon all because of a liability excuse you can’t event identify. This town is a challenging town for our small businesses already! We as a community and especially our city officials should be making every effort to bring people into this town not run them out, businesses included. It increases revenue to help what few small businesses we do have to survive and believe me every little bit counts . Not even to mention you get 150 + people brought to our town from all around, (many of which may have never came here)with their antique cars for an event one time a month April -October that go in shops down town and shop, they stop and gas up and maybe grab snacks at the local convenience store, they eat out at our restaurants (not just mine) and most importantly they invest in our children. The very people you are trying to dissolve away and make impossible to continue graciously gave their time and brought their cars to the Bowdon Elementary open house last week to be a part of the lives of our children..the ones who hold our future! Not only does this make an economic impact on revenue income for the small business owners the City gets their nice share in taxes. The people it brings to our community hopefully find small businesses and restaurants that will bring them back to our community even on days it’s not the car show! Like I said That should be the goal of everyone…but quiet obviously it’s not so what’s the real problem and who is behind this! Make it make sense!!!
I ask you please take the time to read all the post on this page previously and any additional post made in the future, get involved in our City because if we do not then our city will always be what our city has always been and we will never thrive and be the city we want to be. Please stand with me next Tuesday at the city Council Workshop and the following Monday to get to the real truth behind this undue behavior and discrimination against a well known, productive member of society and small business owner in this town. It’s not right and we must take a stand! Events like this is one is very far and between now days where you can honestly say it is a family friendly event. One where the host doesn’t feel alcohol is a staple to draw in crowds, exposing our young children to that, one where at times the gospel is shared with gospel music but all of which times vulgar offensive music or actions are not tolerated or welcomed, one where the fellowship is always friendly and people of all ages come out and enjoy the afternoon, dancing the night away and making memories of a lifetime with family and friends at an alcohol free community event free of charge…yet the city wants to destroy it..I ask you again make it make sense!
Hope to see you next Tuesday at City Hall for the Workshop followed by the City Council meeting the next Monday!

Give you a little back ground on me as an individual as far as my commitment to this community/town beyond my introduction. In 2020, I applied for a grant which consisted of providing information on how I had contributed back to my community so I had to start crunching numbers and when looking through all the benefits I had done for Individuals in our community that were in need of financial assistance due to a tragedy or terminal illnesses and it totaled over $300,000.00. That is 100% profits that was donated to various people in THIS town and THIS community that I am proud to call home. Since that time I have continued to do benefits increasing that number each time. Not ONE penny have I ever taken for my time and a lot of time donated monetarily as well in products. This doesn’t even include the money raised for all the lights in town that eventually had to be taken down after about 3 years because of maintenance expenses that wasn’t budgeted for the city, the life size lighted scenes. I didn’t do this for fame or recognition…not then nor now!
I did it because I love this town, I love the people of this community and I have a servants heart. Then this is the appreciation and thankfulness I get for being a part of this city from our own city council. This is the very reason why we don’t keep good businesses/people in Bowdon because of the lack of appreciation of good ones when we have them. They want to take away something good that has been brought into the community that has thrived and grown, bringing in revenue to our city, helping our small businesses all because they can….help me make sense of that😔 I say all that to say this, they could care less what a productive member to society you and I are or what we bring to the table for this community it’s all about control and authority and until we come together as a community and start standing up for what’s right and becoming involved we will never see a change😔

Take the time and read thru the minutes from the previous council meetings…. We had a very well know family who donated land to the City some years ago and all they ask was develop it in memory of their family. Years pass, the family questions it not being developed with intentions of attempting to take it back if they don’t develop it so here we are, we are gonna put down gravel walking trails, throw in some benches at a later date, put up two really nice signs and call it a park and they have fulfilled their obligation with another park. Another park just like Barr park that is not maintained. I am all for development 110%. I even offered to invest my own money out of my pocket and build a covered stage, if they would develop parking and have a nice place for music and events in the park but no, that offer wasn’t welcomed. They want the music/amp to be in the middle of town. So let’s go back to the plans, develop a walking park…let us keep making our side gorgeous and inviting, keep letting the car cruise enjoy the park, what parks are suppose to be designed for. It can be a win win for everybody and more people than ever will enjoy the new walking park and will even help keep it clean and kept. With development of parks there has to be landscape and grounds maintenance alloted in the budget and set aside for the continuous upkeep so our parks are inviting to the community, a place to enjoy not just another obligation fulfilled and forgot about. There Is a lot to be learned if you take the time to read over all this.

Now let’s look up town…we got store fronts/buildings abandoned that are not attractive for our City not to mention the buildings that are not maintained and kept up that are occupied by owner or rented out. We have side walks that are falling apart with trip hazards everywhere, we have trees growing into the store fronts of businesses (I will admit look better than in the past but they are still all over the store fronts) Promises after promises of new side walks coming for years yet here we are. I will say upon reading through all the city council minutes and agendas it appears that is an upcoming top priority with plans in place by the Mayor to do new side walks. I do want to be clear I do not want anyone to take this the wrong way, my problem is not with the mayor. He has no control in this situation and is not over the City councils decisions. My point of all this brought to you today is to show there are far more things to worry about financially and liability wise than somebody getting on the grass in the park that clearly isn’t a priority to be maintained in the first place.

Next, let's explore the lesser-known park in town, Barr Park. Our goal should be creating an inviting park that is well-maintained, attracting visitors. Simply putting asphalt trails, crepe myrtles, signs, and benches won't suffice. The city recently had a work day but that park needs way more than what a days worth of work could accomplish but since then, maintenance has been lacking. I accidentally stepped into a knee-deep hole that I could not even see until it was too late out in the middle of the open in the grassy area, highlighting the potential dangers. Dead trees have topped out and fallen, posing another liability. Parks need budgets for ongoing landscape maintenance, not just grass cutting. So when someone takes pride and wants to help make a park nice, inviting and enjoyable to the community why would the City Council say no! What’s really the problem? I commend the hard work of everyone on the work days but the upkeep of our parks goes far beyond community work days.
