Nollywood Legend Olu Jacobs Passes Away at 84
Nollywood has lost one of its foundational giants. Veteran Nigerian actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, universally known as Olu Jacobs, has passed away at the age of 84.
His death was confirmed on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, by his family and his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva. The announcement comes just over two months after the iconic actor celebrated his 84th birthday on July 11.
Born in 1942, Jacobs honed his craft at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. He built an impressive early career on British television and stage before returning to Nigeria, where he became an indispensable pillar of Nollywood. Renowned for his imposing screen presence, rich voice, and regal demeanor, he became the definitive face of kings, elder statesmen, and traditional leaders across hundreds of films.
Throughout his storied multi-decade career, Jacobs earned top industry accolades, including the Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007. In 2011, the Nigerian government honored his national legacy by conferring on him the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR). Beyond his on-screen roles, Jacobs and his wife co-founded the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, mentoring generations of Nigerian acting talent.
In his later years, the legendary actor stepped away from the spotlight. Joke Silva publicly shared that he had been living with Lewy body dementia, a progressive neurological disorder. While false rumors of his death had unfortunately surfaced multiple times over the past decade, this official statement from his family marks the true end of an extraordinary era.
