Did you know that most final-expense and pre-need policies come with a mandatory "free look period" (usually 10 to 30 days)? This gives families time to review their decision without financial penalty.

Taking time to examine the fine print helps ensure your arrangements fully protect your family.

It’s Hurricane season!

It’s Hurricane season!

This rarely comes up after a disaster, but FEMA can help pay for a funeral.

When a death is caused directly or indirectly by a presidentially declared emergency or major disaster, FEMA's Individuals and Households Program can provide funeral assistance for uninsured funeral costs, up to program limits.

The person applying doesn't have to live in the disaster area to qualify. Many families simply don't know to apply.

🙏 If this happened to your family, would you know where to start?

Nobody mentions this part of renting when someone passes away: the lease doesn't erase what's owed back.

In most states, a landlord is still required to return a deceased tenant's security deposit, minus any lawful deductions, to the estate rather than simply keeping it. Families are often so focused on funeral arrangements that this step gets missed entirely, and deposits can go unclaimed for months.

It's a right most executors don't even know to ask about. 🏘️

Has your family ever had to untangle a lease after someone died?

Have you considered a pre-paid funeral contract?

Have you considered a pre-paid funeral contract?

What actually happens if you change your mind after signing a prepaid funeral contract?

Florida law requires preneed funeral contracts to state, in conspicuous type printed right on the contract itself, that the buyer can cancel within 30 days for a full refund, not just a verbal disclosure, an actual requirement about how it's printed. And even if a company leaves that language off by mistake, the cancellation right still legally exists either way.

📝 Have you ever actually read the fine print on a contract like this, or signed it and moved on?

What Jonathan doesn’t tell you!

Most people don't know they can still walk away from a life insurance policy after signing it.

Most states require a "free look period," commonly 10 to 30 days, after a new life or final-expense policy is delivered, letting the buyer cancel for a full refund, no penalty, no questions. That includes many of the very policies families buy specifically to fund a prepaid funeral plan.

The exact number of days is printed right in the policy itself, not just the state minimum. 📄 If you'd just signed one of these, would you actually read it closely enough to catch that window?

Worker’s Compensation Accidental Death Benefits

Here's something most families are never told after a workplace death: workers' compensation may help pay for the funeral.

Workers' comp isn't only for injuries. When a work-related injury or illness leads to death, state workers' comp laws commonly include a burial or funeral benefit, alongside payments to surviving dependents. California, for example, pays up to $10,000 in burial expenses for injuries on or after January 1, 2013.

Each state sets its own amount and rules, and the benefit is paid through the employer's workers' comp coverage.

🙏 Would your family know to ask about this?
