Our Lady of Good Success Academy in Pike County has been awarded a $3,454.36 Educational Mini-Grant by the Mark Twain Solid Waste Management District. The grant funding will support a student-led composting and gardening project focused on teaching waste reduction, sustainability, and environmental stewardship through hands-on science education.
Through planting, maintaining, and harvesting the garden, students will gain firsthand experience in composting, soil health, recycling organic materials, and sustainable gardening practices while learning the importance of reducing waste through reuse and natural resource conservation.

I am excited to announce that the City of Bowling Green will soon be throwing a welcome home party for our very own Cotton Fitzsimmons. I’m starting a grassroots fundraising campaign next week to bring a life-size bronze statue of Cotton to our beloved city. The best part of this is that not a single dime of taxpayer money will be used to fund this project.
I have had the wonderful opportunity to be in constant contact with Cotton’s widow, the lovey JoAnn Fitzsimmons. It took some effort to track her down, but with help from Rep. Chad Perkins, I was able to locate her. When I spoke to her by phone the first time, she burst into tears in appreciation. Since then, she has sent me video tributes from the NBA team he coached, the Phoenix Suns, and has shared many stories of Cotton with me.

Laura and Stephen Deleski recently visited Louisiana from Minnesota on a quest to learn more about this town’s first settler, John Basye. Laura is the fifth great-granddaughter of Bayse. She’s been doing genealogical research about her ancestors from this area, which is what brought the two to the Louisiana Area Historical Museum for a visit last week. They said that this is the first time they’ve traveled to Missouri.

Three kittens hidden away inside a van belonging to the Pike County Agency for Developmental Disabilities returning from Vandalia to Bowling Green Thursday, proved elusive.
“When they (the drivers) discovered they were under there, they called my office,” said Bowling Green Code Enforcement officer Tony Windmiller. His office was contacted and he dispatched Animal Control Officer Reid LaFave to retrieve the cats.

Last week, a group of the Northeast Correctional Center medical staff, held a work walkout to draw attention to their issues with the company they work for, Centurion, and the Department of Corrections.
One of the biggest concerns, said Jessica Perkins, is that NECC would be making part of the prison a level five max facility. Normally, she explained, when something like that happens, employees would get a bump in pay. The company that employees the medical staff, Centurion, she said, told her that they would not be giving them that pay bump.

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Missouri 4-H youths helped provide 250,271 meals to families facing food insecurity through the 2026 4-H Feeding Missouri campaign, pushing the initiative past 2.5 million meals statewide since 2019.
Held annually from January through April, the campaign mobilizes young people to serve their communities through volunteering at food banks, organizing drives, raising funds and building awareness about hunger in Missouri, said Sherry Grace, marketing and communications coordinator for Missouri 4-H, a program of University of Missouri Extension.

When he first became a judge, Milan Berry, now with the 45th Circuit Court, said he noticed that there was a lack of mental health services in Pike County.
“One of the things I wanted to do is try to bring more resources to help people get the services they need,” he told the members of the Bowling Green Rotary Club recently.

An estimated 5,000 people joined the festivities and concerts over Memorial Day weekend

In addition to the off-road races managed by Missouri Mudders, two concerts were scheduled for the Memorial Day weekend at Pike’s Off-Road Park, which increased the usual attendance at the park.
“It’s looking like we had about 5,000 people at the park,” said Josh Carmon, who heads Missouri Mudders. “Having the concerts in conjunction with the Missouri Mudders events is what made it such a huge event.”
