Rual Morris Charitable Foundation Awards $500,000 for Vandalia Railroad Park Renovation

The proposed Railroad Park renovation in downtown Vandalia has received a major boost after the Rual Morris Charitable Foundation, Inc. approved a $500,000 grant for the project.

The Foundation’s Board of Directors approved the funding by a unanimous vote.

The grant is designated exclusively for renovating the city-owned Railroad Park property in downtown Vandalia.

The award is subject to significant conditions that must be met before payments begin. The Vandalia Area Historical Society must acquire a legal interest in the park property. The remaining funding necessary for the project must be fully secured through additional grants, binding pledges and verified fundraising. Additionally, the municipal name of Railroad Park must officially change to “Rual Morris Park,” and physical construction on the park renovation project must have begun.

With the Foundation’s action, attention now turns to the City of Vandalia and the Board of Aldermen, who will be asked to consider and approve the conditions associated with the grant and the park renovation project during the next Council meeting, Tuesday, September 8th at 5:30 pm at the Lange Building. This meeting is open, and all interested in the Park Project are encouraged to attend.

If the Board of Aldermen votes to approve moving forward with the park renovation and the Foundation’s award conditions, the Vandalia Area Historical Society will then focus on securing the additional funding necessary for the project to proceed, including a grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Land and Water Conservation Fund. The $500,000 commitment represents a major step forward, but additional funding must still be secured before construction can begin.

More information regarding the Railroad Park Renovation Project and the next steps will be released as it becomes available.
