Albert Ellis, father of CBT, frequently quoted Epictetus.
Can you find the ABC’s in what Epictetus is saying?
Answers:
“THINGS” are A’s (Activating Events)
“THE VIEWS” are B’s (Beliefs and Self-Talk)
“DISTURBED” is C’s (Consequences of Emotions, such as anxiety, anger, and depression.)
I did “historical” research and found out what Epictetus actually looked like. Enjoy!

Albert Ellis Lecturing to Sigmund Freud, Fritz Perls, & Carl Rogers
••• Ellis liked this illustration when I shared it with him. Also, he suggested that A x B = C might better explain the cause of emotions. What do you think?
••• Put your self in the place of Ellis. Imagine explaining the illustration to others who don’t understand how emotions are caused.
••• If you are a “seasoned” therapist, do you recall seeing the “Gloria” film where Rogers (Person-Centered therapy), Ellis (REBT), and Perls (Gestalt therapy) each demonstrate their “brand” of therapy with Gloria, in three one hour sessions, over a couple of days? The Gloria film partly generated the idea for this illustration.
••• Pictures of the four therapists were sent to the artist.
••• Effectively helping yourself or others with CBT includes being able to clearly identify and describe all the figures on the blackboard.

The company owner is Lynn Clark, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist who lives in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky where he taught in the Department of Psychology for over 30 years. Also, he taught counseling courses in Germany and Italy as an Adjunct Professor of Education for Boston University. He has traveled the country giving seminars for mental health professionals and educators.
Behavior therapy with children and cognitive behavioral therapy, especially rational emotive behavior therapy (RE&CBT), are his main professional interests. His book “SOS Help For Emotions” was endorsed by Ellis and DiGiuseppe. As a graduate student at The University of Kansas, he was strongly influenced by behavioral psychology and by “time-out” which arguably originated at that university.
He is the author of “SOS Help For Emotions” (in 8 languages) and “SOS Help For Parents” (in 18 languages), books, videos, programs, and free resources for adults, teens, parents, mental health professionals, and educators available at www.sosprograms.com. As the owner of SOS Programs & Parents Press, he updates his books with each reprinting. His wife, Carole, formerly an elementary teacher, contributed to all books and videos.
Dr. Clark has used most all of the techniques described in “SOS Help For Parents” with his own two sons as they were growing up. When they were older, he taught them the self-help principles of rational emotive behavior therapy (RE&CBT) now presented in “SOS Help For Emotions” books and videos.
He has extensive professional experience in community mental health centers, hospitals, counseling centers, and community agencies. He is a member of the American Psychological Association and Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies.
Dr. Clark received a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from The University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas, a program approved by the American Psychological Association. He received traineeship and internship training in Veterans Hospitals in Topeka, Kansas, Leavenworth, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri.
His hobbies include canoeing, kayaking, travel, snorkeling, fitness, and formerly motorcycles (he has owned 13) until he gave them up in favor of of longevity. At last count, he has seven grandchildren.
