An excellent write up for Thumos from the always knowledgeable progressor.net. Thank you!
Mini-review - Thumos: The Trial of Socrates (2025)
US project Thumos are out with the album "The Trial of Socrates", and I suspect that progressive metal is the best manner in which to categorize the landscapes explored on this production. This is a thematic double album filled with instrumental music, a description that will be tantalizing for some and not so much for others. The compositions are generally atmospheric laden affairs, often with a flow, momentum and an ebb and flow structure fans of the post-rock tradition will recognize. That we get textures and overlays with a clear orientation towards that style of music merits a mention too I suspect. We also get a liberal array of delicate, firm and plucked guitar motifs throughout, some of them with a little bit of a world music feel to them, and some of them actually being rather energetic in approach and ex*****on too. Otherwise wee have bombastic arrangements with more of a doom metal feel, more intense parts where a higher tempo and intensity adds a bit of an extreme metal flavoring to the proceedings, and plenty of more atmospheric laden sequences where plucked guitars, guitar riffs and keyboards combine in a few different manners. With a little bit of a flirt with atonal notes and noise textures along the way. This is a sprawling creation on several levels, and a bit of a treat to those who enjoy atmospheric laden instrumental progressive metal of the kind that incorporate everything from ethereal dreamladen moments to slight steps inside of the extreme metal spectrum with regular stops and check ins with doom metal and post-rock along the way.
