Same brand. Three completely different personalities.

For this design experiment, and for our post on Friday, we have a fictional secret society, and I used Photoshop textures to see how far I could push the same brand identity without changing the core design.

From aged paper to leather, each texture completely changes how the brand feels, even though the logo stays the same.

It’s a good reminder that brand identity goes way beyond your logo. Texture, typography, color, and the little imperfections all help tell people what a brand is supposed to feel like.

Which direction fits The Black Veil Society: 1, 2, or 3

This week, we built a world around a secret literary society. 📚

The inspiration started with Oxford, the moodier visuals of the later Harry Potter films, and a full embrace of dark academia as we head toward fall.

Old books. Dark wood. Leather. Metal accents. Warm candlelight. Desaturated tones. A little mystery.

But the invitation became one of my favorite details.

I wanted it to feel like someone was deep into their reading when a small envelope slipped underneath their door.

Inside: an invitation.

So now the question is…

Do you respond? Do you go?

Because let’s be honest, there is absolutely no way there aren’t secret literary societies hiding somewhere in Oxford.

Every Monday, I take the photos. By Friday, John turns the concept into a complete brand identity.

Come back Friday to see what this one becomes.

We spend money on a lot of things as business owners.

Some of them? Necessary. (Others... questionable)
And some of them, we would happily pay for again and again. ☕🎥💻

So here are 5 things we genuinely think are worth the money:
☕ Coffee, obviously.
🎥 Content gear we can rely on.
🗂️ Systems that keep us organized and help us actually find things when we need them.
💻 Adobe. Enough said.
🤝 And professional creative support.

Sometimes the best investment isn’t another tool.
Sometimes it’s paying someone to do the thing that’s taking up way too much of your time.

BTW… that’s what we do. 🤭

What’s something you spend money on for your business that you think is 100% worth it?

Meet Meadow & Crumb — a fictional bakery and pastry shop inspired by the charm of the English countryside. For this brand identity concept, I wanted everything to feel warm, nostalgic, handcrafted, and slightly vintage while still working as a cohesive modern brand.

Sometimes creating a fake brand is the best way to experiment with a completely new design style.

Hiring someone to manage your social media can feel intimidating, especially when you don’t fully understand how social media marketing works yourself.

And honestly, you shouldn’t have to.

You don’t need to understand every algorithm, metric, or piece of marketing jargon to make a smart decision about who you hire.

You just need to be able to answer three questions:

1. What was the goal?
2. What was the process?
3. Did it work, and if not, why?

A good marketer should be able to walk you through those answers in a way that actually makes sense to you.

Because you shouldn’t have to blindly trust someone with your marketing just because they know more about Instagram than you do.

You deserve to understand what you’re paying for.

Save this Playbook for the next time you’re considering hiring a marketer.

And next week, we’re flipping the question around: how do you know if your own social media is actually working?

Instagram is slowly rolling out a new “Series” feature, and while neither of our accounts has access to it yet, we’re actually more interested in what the feature tells us about where social media is headed.
We’ve been encouraging businesses to stop thinking post by post and start thinking in content people want to come back for.
Recurring ideas. Recognizable formats. Stories that continue.
Because the goal isn’t to simply give your audience more content.
It’s to give them a reason to follow along.
The feature might make that easier, but it can’t create the strategy for you.
So, what could your audience come back for?
Tell us your business below and we’ll give you a series idea.

Which font pairing wins?

Two font combinations. One design. I can’t decide — so I’m leaving it up to you. Which typography combo works better: Option 1 or Option 2? Both pairs can fit, but both change the mood of the brand.

What should a bag of scones feel like?

For this shoot, I wanted to create something that felt like a countryside bakery in England: earthy, natural, sophisticated, textured, and timeless.

The inspiration came from a recent trip to the Cotswolds with my husband, where quiet luxury looked less like extravagance and more like slowing down, enjoying beautiful surroundings, and sitting down for something delicious on fine china.

That became the creative direction for this shoot.

Every prop, texture, color, and composition was chosen to support that feeling, from the blue gingham and wicker basket to the old tablecloth and gold-detailed china.

Because good product photography isn’t just about making a product look good. It’s about deciding what that product should feel like, then building a visual world around it.

These images are the starting point.

On Friday, John gets to take this visual direction and turn it into an actual brand identity. 👀

Which direction would you have chosen for the brand: Lady Fairwell’s Bakery or Country Sunday?

Small business wins deserve to be celebrated. 🥹

Not just the huge milestones, the first client, the first sale, or even the first five-star review. Maybe it's the month you finally broke even. The moment you realized, “Wait… we’re actually doing this.”

So let’s celebrate them. 👏

Drop a photo from the last year that represents a win you’re proud of. Big or small, we want to see it.

We’ll go first: our first-ever check as business owners. 🎉

Your turn: what’s one small business win you’ll never forget?

Building a brand from the ground up
For this concept project, I created a full brand identity for a fictional outdoor boot company — from the logo and typography to the color palette and overall visual direction. The goal was to create something rugged, timeless, and built for the outdoors without losing that polished, intentional feel.

Brand identity is more than a logo. It’s about creating a visual system that makes a brand feel recognizable before you even read the name.
