There are only two accepted representations of William Shakespeare that are considered “official” – but could a portrait that has been hanging over a family’s mantelpiece for the last 50 years be the third? British window washer Steven Wadlow, whose father bought the portrait in the 1960s, is on the hunt to prove the painting is indeed genuine. If so, it could be worth as much as $200 million.

"If opinion and manners did not forbid us to march to glory by the same paths as the men, we should at least equal, and sometimes surpass them in our love for the public good." — Esther Reed

While soldiers fought in threadbare uniforms, women across the colonies found their own way to serve. Esther Reed, a prominent woman from Philadelphia, published a pamphlet urging women to give up luxuries and raise funds for the troops. They collected 300,000 Continental dollars. And when George Washington said his soldiers needed shirts, Reed's organization, the Ladies' Association of Philadelphia, made more than 2,000 of them.

Discover how colonial women fueled the fight for independence in The American Revolution, a film by Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt. Premieres Sun, Nov 16.
