Tim’s Fermented Purslane Recipe:
Did you know purslane (Portulaca oleracea) — that “pesky” w**d in your garden — is actually edible and delicious? While it’s often considered a nuisance in vegetable beds, purslane is full of nutrients and can even be found in cultivated varieties from seed companies like Johnny’s Seeds.
Here’s how Tim turned his garden purslane into something tasty and unique:
Ingredients:
- 1 Liter water
- 20 g salt
- 200 g young purslane shoots (harvested before flowering)
- 50 g fresh dill (flowering umbels work great)
- 1 garlic clove, halved
- 1 piece of horseradish, 2 inches long, halved (optional)
Directions:
1. Boil the water with salt, then let it cool.
2. Wash the purslane and dill, then pack them into a 1.5 L jar with the garlic and horseradish.
3. Pour in the cooled brine until everything is completely covered.
4. Let it ferment at room temperature (in a dark place) for 10 days, opening the jar every couple of days to release pressure.
5. Refrigerate for about two weeks and enjoy.
The purslane will keep for a long time and develops a tangy, refreshing flavor. This recipe was inspired by a Bavarian Television program and adapted from Tim’s garden.

THANK YOU, Montana! 🎉 You helped us bridge the gap!
We never doubted Montanans would come to our aid, but the speed and generosity of your response surpassed every expectation. 💙
The overwhelming success of this campaign is more than financial, it’s a testament to the value of publicly-funded, independent, educational media in our state and in the country. Your support went far beyond donations. People sent hundreds of handwritten notes expressing encouragement, sympathy, and solidarity. Each message lifted our spirits, renewed our faith, and reminded us why this work matters. We are humbled, inspired, and above all else, grateful. You DID IT! Thank you!

On October 1, 1984 viewers in the Gallatin Valley experienced the first over-the-air signal from KUSM-TV. MSU had received permission from the FCC, The Montana Board of Regents, and The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) to rebroadcast the KUED, Salt Lake City signal as its primary programming source. This first service was a response to a citizens group representing the growing non-cabled area surrounding Bozeman. They asked if MSU could find a way to combine the promised gift of a transmitter and antenna from a commercial broadcaster (Joe Sample) with their need for quality childrens' programming.
