U.S. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Montana, is hopeful the record-long federal government shutdown could end “within the next few days.”

Daines said there have been discussions with Democratic senators about bringing the shutdown, which began Oct. 1, to an end.

Daines said five to 10 Democrats are part of those shutdown discussions.

Senate Republicans need five Democrats to vote for federal spending measures that will reopen the government.

Daines expects the Senate to stay in session as the weekend approaches and a potential deal is reached.

“They want it to end,” Daines said of the Democrats in discussions with Republicans and the Trump White House.

The City-County of Butte-Silver Bow declared a local emergency on Wednesday because of the loss of SNAP benefits, the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program.

Butte-Silver Bow Chief Executive JP Gallagher signed the proclamation, and local commissioners passed a corresponding emergency resolution to use $183,974 to alleviate food insecurity in the local community.

“Butte has gone through tough times, and people step up,” Gallagher told the Daily Montanan. “If the state and federal government aren’t going to step in, we’re going to do what we can with the resources we have.”

Bridger Aerospace (Nasdaq: BAER) has forged a new $331.5 million financing deal with investment firm Bain Capital.

Belgrade-based company has a fleet of firefighting airplanes and contracts with states and the federal government to fight wildfires. The Montana company also fights fires in Canada and has been retrofitting airplanes in Spain to fight fires in Europe.

The deal was announced Oct. 29 and includes a $21.5 million line of credit, $100 million in financing help for Bridger to expand its aerial firefighting fleet and $210 million loan.

“Together, these transactions refinance Bridger’s $160 million municipal bond with Gallatin County, consolidate the company’s existing debt, and provide significant capacity and financial flexibility through a delayed draw facility designed to fund future fleet expansion,” the company said in announcement.

It’s just under one year out from the next general election in Montana, and efforts are already underway by the state Republican Party to elbow out candidates it deems not conservative enough and make space for hardliners.

At the center of that work is a new group assembled by the recently elected leadership of the Montana Republican Party called the Conservative Governance Committee. And while the new stewards of the state’s majority party contended in emails and interviews in recent weeks that the committee’s work is little more than common political practice, its members and procedures have to date been largely kept from the public and Republican candidates themselves.

The Montana State News Bureau confirmed five members of the clandestine committee and spoke with a dozen Republicans across the ideological spectrum about its rollout under the new state GOP leadership.
