A new current: CMR water conflict changes course.

It was standing room only inside the Park County courtroom gallery as District 6 Judge Adam M. Larsen presided over the latest development in Crazy Mountain Ranch's water rights dispute saga.

Drawing a crowd of more than 80 spectators, some of whom resorted to sitting on the floor, the hearing concluded with an order that the status quo continue for two weeks. Another hearing, on June 17, could determine whether appointed water commissioners or CMR control the Upper Criswell Ditch headgate on Rock Creek.

Museum of the Rockies director steps down after eight years.

The executive director of Museum of the Rockies at Montana State University, Christopher Dobbs, announced today that he is stepping down to take a position at the Museum at Blue Mountain Lake in upstate New York, according to a press release from MSU.

Under Dobbs' eight-year tenure, the museum grew substantially — boosting attendance by 30%, completing a 20-year strategic plan, renovating the planetarium and several galleries, and earning reaccreditation from the American Alliance of Museums, a distinction held by only about 3% of museums nationwide.

'One hell of a job': Nelson, Vance laud Fireweed Campaigns' management ahead of election day defeat.

Final voters exited the lobby at the Gallatin County Courthouse on Tuesday at 8 p.m. Poll workers locked the doors. Ballot counting began.

Alone other than one Chronicle reporter covering the election was House District 67 candidate and former Belgrade mayor Russell Nelson, awaiting the first wave of reporting.

“They’ve done incredible stuff for me,” Nelson said when asked if hiring Fireweed Campaigns, a self-described politically independent Helena-based firm with only Republican, independent, and nonpartisan clients, officially admonished by the Montana GOP in April, was worth the flack.

Revitalizing Bozeman Creek.

Bozeman Creek’s headwaters are nestled high in the Gallatin Range, nearly ten miles south of downtown Bozeman. As flows make their way into downtown, running alongside the Gallagator Trail, through downtown, and through Bogert Park, the water travels through tunnels, under buildings, and along reconfigured routes established as the city was developed over the last two centuries.

“A lot of people knew it was there, but it was almost an afterthought,” Steve Noble, co-founder of citizen group See Bozeman Creek, said. “It’s the principal source of water for the City of Bozeman, and yet it was paved and built over and neglected for decades and decades.”

The Montana State women’s track & field team was honored as the Big Sky Commissioner’s Team of the Month for May, the conference office announced on Wednesday.

The honor comes after a historic month for the Bobcats, who earned the Big Sky women’s outdoor title, advanced 11 to the NCAA West Regionals and qualified five for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Additionally, head coach Lyle Weese was named Big Sky Women’s Outdoor Coach of the Year in a unanimous vote by the league’s coaches.

'Deadrock Review': Indie newspaper spotlights Montana arts.

Dalton C. Brink walked up and down Main Street in Bozeman, toting a leather satchel stuffed full of the inaugural issue of The Deadrock Review.

He popped in and out of businesses, chipping away at his mission to distribute 1,000 copies of Livingston’s newest arts and culture newspaper.

“A Montana love letter to humanity,” Brink launched Deadrock to fill a void he observed in arts and culture media.

'They forget whose land they're on': Bozeman realtor apologizes for anti-Native repost.

Amanda Caldwell sells Montana ranch land for an average of $745,000 a transaction. On Tuesday, she reshared a post to her Facebook followers celebrating that a scenic stretch of it had no Native people in sight, a post she now says she shared by accident.

Caldwell, a Realtor with Montana Life Real Estate Group and a social media influencer with 144,000 followers, shared a story to her Facebook of a woman riding a horse with the caption: "'Finally a scenic spot that isn't filled with Indians' Some guy in 1821, and also me in 2026.”

Election Day: Bozeman, Belgrade primary voters weigh in.

Tuesday, Election Day: A subdued primary opening at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds and Belgrade High School Special Event Center voting sites gave way to a busy afternoon at the county courthouse, another Bozeman voting location, where seemingly unending processions of vehicles and walk-up voters dropped off ballots.

On the street in Bozeman, interest in the closely watched Democratic primary U.S. Congressional and Senate races drew a strong Democratic majority to the ballot box. The situation was the antithesis from the Belgrade Special Events Center. There, most participants were of a Republican persuasion.
