Sending a heartfelt congratulations from the Montana Media Coalition to Senator Greg Hertz and Representative Mark Thane, who were named Montana Legislators of the Year by the Montana Ambassadors for their bipartisan work on our bill, SB 326.

They went above and beyond to champion the creative industries here in Montana, and we’re deeply grateful for their leadership, collaboration, and commitment to supporting local storytellers and filmmakers.

The Montana Ambassadors recognized many outstanding leaders at their Annual Awards Ceremony during last week’s convening in Big Sky, celebrating individuals and organizations whose leadership, vision, and service have made a lasting difference for Montana’s economy and communities.

“These awards are a reflection of what the Montana Ambassadors have stood for over the past forty years — bringing people together to strengthen our economy, open doors for new opportunities, and showcase the very best of Montana,” said Spencer Buck, Executive Director of the Montana Ambassadors.

“Our honorees remind us that leadership is not about titles, it’s about service.”

Here’s to teamwork, progress, and the bright future of Montana media!

We have such a great community of filmmakers! Thanks for attending our first in-person meet-up in Missoula at Goodworks Ventures. We laughed, we ate, we networked and we learned about some affordable housing project with Kiah. But mostly we celebrated all our hard-work! Next meet up in Butte. More information to come.

A message from our executive director Lynn-Wood Fields: Lots of people have been asking what is happening with film in Montana and the new Studio in Missoula called Story House. This is an industry that I am very proud to be a part of, and even more proud that we have wrangled back for MT filmmakers.

Here is my response:

As the Executive Director of the Montana Media Coalition which is made up of over 200 MT filmmakers, businesses and supporters of the Mt media manufacturing, we are excited to have a studio like Story House. We just spent over a year getting the incentive/MTMedia Act SB 326 to be more beneficial for MT filmmakers instead of just large productions.

Moving forward, the credit will have reserves that save some of its funds for film projects like those that spend $3MM or less, which are all the projects I have been a part of over the years. These smaller projects hire almost all MT filmmakers. SB 326 will also have funds reserved for projects that hire 15 or more local filmmakers or shoot in a studio space. It will also give a 30% incentive for hiring Veterans and Tribal crew and 25% for MT crew. These are hard working, blue collar jobs that we are proud of doing but that big productions didn’t always hire locally. This in turn created housing issues by bringing in crew.

We, MT filmmakers and businesses, are excited to hear that Story House (who are from Wyoming and not Hollywood) is focused on hiring locally first and not sourcing out of state. We have a wage issue in MT and higher wages means more of us can stay, buy homes and raise our families here. This is the opposite of what has been happening and it is important that those of us living here play a part in the stories being told here.

As a Montanan, I am dedicated to helping train and crew local filmmakers to grow this industry in a way that makes Montana proud.

Hi MMC members & supporters. As you know, we lost the House vote on Friday morning but we were granted a revote which takes place tomorrow. We are calling all filmmakers and MMC supporters to show up in person if you are able to.

Date: Tuesday April 22nd at The State Capital. Rotunda on second floor from 8:45am. Allow time for parking.

If you have any questions about logitsics for tomorrow feel free to message Lynn-Wood Fields, Jeri Rafter, or myself (Michele Gray).

It has been a difficult and disappointing few days, but just a friendly reminder that if we do not win the vote tomorrow, please be respectful and cordial.

We have been busy contacting legislators today. As of right now, we are still in the race.

Thanks and we hope to see you tomorrow at The MT State Capitol🍀

“You might not initially associate the term ‘working class’ with people in the film industry, but talk to pretty much any Montanan who does jobs on these productions and you’ll find someone with a pretty normal, punch-the-clock style job, except their clock is on a film set, not an office. You won’t see a key grip’s name on a movie poster, but if they didn’t show up to work on that production, you’d be looking at a blank theater screen.”

A bill in front of lawmakers could increase film and TV productions in Montana, providing work for the prop masters, wranglers, transportation coordinators and sound mixers who live here.

We made it through the Senate! It was a big week for LW and team — and we still have lots of work to do as we prepare to move to the House next week. It will be challenging, but right now we are happy that the hard work has paid off. Keep the good energy coming! And give this awesome human Lynn-Wood Fields a virtual high five! 🇺🇸🙌
