last summer I slowly began a composition titled “between the lakes” - taken from the official description of where my brother died, referring to a stretch of highway between Pathfinder & Alcova, just outside Casper, Wyoming, where our parents live.
between the lakes is a meditation on liminality, ungraspability, Lacan’s The Real… a fleeting moment that stretches from 2/6/2025 to eternity in a space both within and outside of myself, mostly through a one take recording of me playing harmonium in my studio. Layered with synthesizer, violin, a bell and an ocarina my brother gave me ages ago

Sluice Gate is a collection of songs written, recorded, and mixed in my Chicago apartment throughout 2024 and 2025.
They reflect a particularly tumultuous year in my life; ‘flooded’ is how I’ve thought about it. Difficulties associated with gender, mental health, and community made these songs what they are, as did all the moments of catharsis I felt in between.

Two synths and archaic software flesh out the occult machines behind Range of Devotion, behind which Tomas Phillips, Tannon Penland, and Robert Donne press the keys that sound.

What is devotion in art and music? From what impulse does it emerge? Who or what do we worship? Each track tests these questions with disquieting, echoing resonance.

Tomas migrates between minimalist and metal soundworlds, having released music on such labels as Line Imprint and Trente Oiseaux and contributed to Southern Lord bands Loincloth and Leather Hearse, of which Tannon has been a principal writer.
He and Tomas also constitute the core of avant-metal project Gauchiste. Robert has played with Labradford, Pan American, and Anjou, among others, and has scored numerous films, including 2018's The Mountain.

The new Ümlaut album “Penumbra” is out now!

The new album by Ümlaut, called “Penumbra,” is a natural extension of his most recent album, “The distance between two points.” In the former, listeners are taken on a planetary voyage through infinite space. With “Penumbra,” listeners are invited to sonically absorb the phenomenon of a partial eclipse — when the alignment of the sun, moon and earth cause an occluding body to obscure a fragment of a light source.

Continued experimentation with tape loops, field recordings and synthesizers create new abstract soundscapes, which explore the regions of the umbra. Shadows are partial and imperfect. Imperfections brought to the forefront of the compositions simultaneously expose their shadow sides.
