Today's show is a remembrance of a special Friendly Neighbor, Glen Simpson often appeared on the show, including a special set at the Grand Opening of the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum in 2015. Glen also often played many live shows with our legacy host, the wonderful Elaine Purkey, all throughout the coalfields.
This show was recorded at the old Chapmanville Hugh School and features a special guest announcer, Matt Spurlock.
Mrs. Elaine Purkey opens the show, welcoming folks and introducing FNS favorite Kurt Conley with a solid bluegrass classic, ‘Rose of Old Kentucky’.
Glen Simpson and Glenn Dillon take the stage with a set of three originals, including ‘105 Degrees’, about another heat wave just a few years back.
They end their set with ‘Red Robin Inn’ about a wonderful establishment that was taken by the construction of Rt119. Glen's original songs are both humorous and insightful, and we’ll miss his musical storytelling.
The Guyan Gospel Group brings us a wonderful gospel message in the old time classic ‘Look What I Traded for a Mansion’, followed by Nick with West Virginian Blind Alfred Reed’s ‘Always Lift Him Up and Never Knock Him Down’.
Our host Elaine brings her powerful vocal to our next selection, ‘Shady Grove’, a traditional tune made popular by eastern Kentucky’s Jean Ritchie.
This show marks the first appearance of some wonderful folks who have become regulars on the show over the past few years, Maggie and Ricky bring a set of three songs, including two originals that showcase their great songwriting skills and musical abilities. One of their originals, ‘Sinners Like Us’ has all the makings of a gospel classic.
Friendly Neighbor Show favorites Mike Wilson, TC Tomcat and Bill Hunter bring us a classic country blues song, ‘When the Levee Breaks’, first recorded by Memphis Minnie and (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memphis_Minnie) Kansas Joe McCoy (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kansas_Joe_McCoy) in 1929.
Elaine brings us our sponsor round up, reminding our listeners to patronize the folks that support the show, and then leads the congregation in ‘Will the Circle Be Unbroken’ to close out today’s show.
Generous support for today’s show has been provided by PB Holistics, LLC, total well-being, body, mind and spirit.
