In my latest YouTube video, I show the process of making a pair of 1940's overalls for yard work, gardening, house work, etc., with that vintage aesthetic that I love so much. The link is below, as well as in my IG bio.
I chose some sturdy cotton twill from Fabric Wholesale Direct, and grabbed Simplicity 8447 from my pattern drawer. I decided to follow the design and instructions pretty exactly this time, with only a few exceptions.
Instead of making alterations to the paper pattern for the bodice front piece, I chose to create my own pattern by using the draping method with a large canvas scrap to get a more exact fit, while taking less brain work. I kept the general shape of the original bodice, but made two darts (per side) instead of one, placing one at the waist seam and one at the side seam. I also raised the position of the bodice pocket a bit.
Instead of following the pattern instructions for the cuffs, where you would turn the hem allowance to the inside, double the width of the cuff, and then turn the cuff back out, I just turned up the cuff twice on the outside. This was because I didn't give myself quite enough length to do the other. Because I had flat felled my seams, it wasn't super noticeable, but I'll change my pattern before making the pants again.
Last minute, I decided to add a bit of free hand embroidery to the pockets, just for a little fun femininity. Next time, I might add more pockets too. It doesn't hurt to have extras!
I'm so happy with the way that this project turned out, and I can't wait to have excuses to wear these overalls, and to make more! π
