I knew in high school that what God had planned for me would demand I make an impossible decision. Much later I realized that choice was to have a family or devote myself to the Southern Collective Experience. Either I’d not fulfill my purpose and resent my family, or I’d fulfill my purpose and my family would grow to hate me. I’ve never regretted the gamble I made, but most of that stuck because keeping my girlfriend was tantamount to wooing a woman devoted to Ayn Rand to make me a grilled cheese. Now, not a midlife crisis, but this nagging certainty I’d be a fantastic father. My life since a horrible breakup due to her inability to keep her legs together cooled into calm over the last two weeks. Even if never works out. I have the backhanded blessing that in my soul I’d raise a kid who might stay mischievous, but the baby boy would never be too much for me to devote more love within me than I thought possible.
