Weā€™re home, and I keep replaying our last week in Kamakura like itā€™s still happening.

It wouldā€™ve been so easy to end our summer how we usually do ā€” pool days, parks, bike rides, and BBQs. Instead we packed up our whole life for a month and let our kids grow up a little in a place none of us had ever been.

I didnā€™t expect the ache I feel now. Not for the sights ā€” for the people. The families who got it without explanation. The quiet, endless kindness of everyone we met. Mornings that didnā€™t feel rushed. Evenings that felt full.

I donā€™t think this needs to be a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Weā€™re already talking about where we go next.

Ten years in a classroom didnā€™t make homeschooling feel automatic ā€” it just meant I knew what ā€œschoolā€ was supposed to look like, and I had to unlearn most of it. Turns out the thing that qualifies you isnā€™t a credential. Itā€™s showing up.
