As many wonderful people gather tonight to celebrate the cherished memory of Shalie Dawn Bucholz Lipp, I want to share the news of how Shalie's zest for life and passion for mixed martial arts was displayed at the 138th Annual North Dakota Newspaper Association Convention this past weekend in Mandan.
I only entered three items in the Better Newspaper Contest, none more dear to me than the "Lipp Lifestyle" story.
The entries were judged by a panel of newspaper professionals from West Virginia, who awarded Shalie's story first place in the "Sports Feature" category.
The panel was able to read about Shalie's adventurous life, and realized how transcendent and impactful she was as a person, evident by their first place selection.
Then, Shalie's story was displayed on the projector for a large crowd that included North Dakota and South Dakota Newspaper Association members at the joint convention.
It makes me happy to know that more people were introduced to the "Lipp Lifestyle," reading about Shalie's magnificent character traits and hopefully being motivated through her legacy. For the first time, the convention featured pop-up displays of the winning stories, meaning Shalie's article was posted in the ballroom for hundreds of people to read following the awards ceremony.
I hope we never stop talking about Shalie Lipp, the person and the fighter, the friend and the family member.
"Every (wo)man has two deaths, when (s)he is buried in the ground and the last time someone says his/her name. In some ways (wo)men can be immortal." - Ernest Hemingway
