While the focus of PSGS is local, many of our members are actively researching their roots from across the U. and other parts of the world, and we enjoy sharing our discoveries. Since most of our activities are focused on education and research, the Genealogy Center located at Sylvan Way Branch, 1301 Sylvan Way, Bremerton, provides the resources for our own research as well as assisting genealogists from other parts of the country.

We’re opening the doors.

Please join us on Sunday, October 11, for the dedication of the new Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial Visitor Center, followed by a public open house from 2:00–4:00 p.m.

This new Visitor Center represents more than 20 years of work to preserve this history, honor the families who experienced it, and ensure its lessons continue to reach future generations.

Dedication Ceremony: 12:30 p.m.
Public Open House: 2:00–4:00 p.m.

Parking will be available at American Legion Hall with free shuttle service. The Pritchard Park lots are reserved for Survivors and attendees requiring special accommodations.

Puget Sound Genealogical Society Cemetery Project Committee members like a bell

A weathered wooden frame, an old bell and a softly faded sign welcomed me into Maplewood, one of those quiet Maine villages that could easily be missed if you are moving too quickly.

Maplewood is part of Parsonsfield, a rural York County town first settled during the 1770s and officially incorporated in 1785. The town was named for Thomas Parsons, one of the original proprietors, and its early communities grew around farms, mills, churches and the waterways that provided power for local industry. Maplewood became one of several distinct villages within the larger town, each developing its own little identity while sharing in Parsonsfield’s long history.

I was unable to verify the age or original purpose of this particular bell, so I will respectfully leave that story with the people who know Maplewood best. Whatever its history may be, it makes a wonderfully fitting welcome. It feels humble, honest and unmistakably New England, the sort of landmark that does not need to be polished or grand to make you slow down and appreciate where you are.
