NEW HAMPSHIRE BEACHES REMAIN SAFE AS MASSACHUSETTS FACES BEACH CLOSURES

Concord, NH July 1, 2026 : As we head into an Extreme Heat Watch and the busy Fourth of July holiday weekend, many are understandably concerned about reports of sewage contamination affecting beaches in northeastern Massachusetts.

Following heavy rainfall on June 26, a sewage line ruptured near Haverhill's main pumping station. According to Haverhill's Department of Public Works, an estimated 8 to 10 million gallons of sewage per day have been discharged into the Merrimack River while repairs are underway. As a result, numerous Massachusetts beaches have been closed, including beaches in Salisbury, Newburyport, Ipswich, and Plum Island.

I have been in contact with leadership at the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (DES), the New Hampshire Fish & Game Department, and Iain Watt, Director of the Division of Public Health Services at the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). New Hampshire Fish & Game are monitoring shoreline and shellfish.

I am pleased to report that New Hampshire beaches remain safe at this time.

DES and DHHS have increased water quality monitoring throughout the holiday weekend, with additional sampling at beaches from Seabrook through North Hampton. Testing includes a panel of bacteria, including E. coli and other water quality indicators.

To date, there have been no exceedances of New Hampshire's recreational water quality standards. State officials report that tidal conditions and dilution have helped protect New Hampshire's coastline from the contamination affecting areas farther south.

DES will continue enhanced monitoring throughout the weekend and has assured me that I will be notified immediately if testing identifies any concerns requiring public notification.

Residents and visitors can also check the New Hampshire Healthy Swimmer Mapper which provides the latest beach water quality advisories before heading to the beach.
