That's what Assemblymember Anamarie Ávila Farías told the teacher who was shocked to see her name on a ballot. She's the granddaughter of a Bracero, was raised by a single mom with a sixth-grade education, became the first Latina ever elected to the Martinez City Council, and now serves in the California State Assembly.
And as of this week, her bill is law. AB 1627, the MELT ICE Act, means federal immigration agents with serious misconduct on their record can't become cops in California.
We sat down with her in her Concord office and talked about:
