When I opened TagMeek Productions in Putnam County NY 4 years ago, I knew absolutely no one. Over the previous few years, I had largely worked in Connecticut. I called the Hudson Valley Film Commission, mostly to establish contact, and was expecting not much else. Much to my surprise, I reached the Founder and Executive Director, Laurent Rejto. He couldn't have been warmer and more welcoming and was happy to introduce me to the community and guide me through the film resources available in the region. When I embarked on my first Hudson Valley production, Laurent was quick to refer me to crew and vendors. When I asked for help securing a picture car, he posted the request and the response was staggering. No one knew the film community in the region better than Laurent, nor was anyone better respected.
He proceeded to recommend my company to any production considering a Mid-Hudson Valley shoot, but things were quiet post pandemic and after industry union strikes. I was forced to work out of state, but Laurent continued to check in, inquiring about where my next shoot would be and if I might be back in New York. Laurent lived and breathed this film community and endlessly strove to drive its success. He was its biggest champion, forever advocating for the local folks who relied on Hudson Valley productions to thrive.
Today the Hudson Valley feels a little lonelier to me. I've lost a friend and an ally. This industry is crazy, competitive and sometimes even cruel, but Laurent was one of the good ones. He was kind, caring and devoted to this region. His mark is indelible, his loss difficult to bear. Laurent is irreplaceable, but my hope is that we all find a way to carry his legacy forward.... become a little more passionate about promoting where we live and work, be a little kinder and more generous with those we work with and compete against, and find a way to exhibit even some of the dedication Laurent had to move the industry forward in the Hudson Valley. There's no better way to pay tribute to Laurent and his many contributions.
