Brewster Fire Department

Brewster Fire Department Fire Department In 1870, the Brewster Fire Department was formed by a group of local merchants and willing residents of the community.

Their efforts were the beginning of a life saving and property protection organization that has evolved into a modern fire defense and ambulance service. Today our department covers the town of Southeast which includes the village of Brewster. The Town of Southeast, NY, which was founded in 1788, is located at the crossroads of Interstate highways Route 684 and Route 84, and State Routes 22, 312,

6 and 202. Metro-North Railroad's Harlem Line has two stops that service the area at Brewster Village and Southeast Station off Route 312. The Town is just over 34 square miles with a population of 17,316 - which makes it the second largest town in Putnam County, NY. Each year our department responds to over 1500 calls for emergency assistance. The department membership force is highly trained to react to all types of emergencies. The equipment at our disposal is the most modern and sophisticated available, thus enabling us to offer fast and efficient services. Our current membership status is 130 men and women, and is completely volunteer.

Congratulations BREWSTER FD on winning

Brewster FD was presented with (3) special awards at the annual PCVFA Convention Meeting held July 28 at Lake Carmel FD, with many of its members showing support, as you can see from this group shot! Their winners:

CAPT. KEVIN DURMER (front row, center) - Capt. Durmer won this year's EMS PROVIDER of the YEAR Award from Putnam County VFA, just as he did from the Hudson Valley VFA Convention in Lake George! In July 2024, Capt. Durmer successfully resuscitated a male victim who had gone into cardiac arrest while in his swimming pool. His immediate response, technical ability and quality CPR were critical components in this life-saving incident. By the time Brewster FD members arrived on scene, the victim was breathing on his own.

MORGAN DURMER (front row, left) - Capt Durmer was with his wife, Morgan, when the above call was dispatched. Having no experience or training in EMS, Morgan Durmer reacted selflessly and courageously as she assisted her husband in the vital CPR efforts needed to save this victim's life. She was presented with one of the two CIVILIAN of the YEAR awards given out.

KRISTINE FANZO (front row, right) - Kristine Fanzo received the second CIVILIAN of the YEAR award. While working at The Children's Station of Brewster on Nov 15 she noticed one of the toddlers who'd been eating a banana suddenly start coughing, then stopped, becoming pale. It was her keen observation and quick response to pick the child up and perform successful back blows to dislodge the food that allowed the child's breathing to resume.

CONGRATULATIONS TO EACH OF THESE WINNERS, YOUR AWARDS ARE WELL-DESERVED!

If you're waking up to the smell of smoke and a light haze in the sky don't be alarmed. Wildfires in Canada are causing smoke and air quality issues across parts of the United States. The smoke, which can travel long distances, is impacting visibility, causing hazy skies, and creating a burning smell. Air quality alerts have been issued for many areas, and sensitive groups are advised to take precautions.

A wonderful ceremony dedicating the new burn building at the Lt. Michael Neuner Training Center in Kent. Here are a few remarks from Brewster Fire Chief Michael Miller.

I am honored to be here today with a few of the members behind me from the great BFD.

First and foremost, thank you to everyone who was involved in completing this successful project.

What a truly beautiful day it is, perfect for us to gather here and commemorate the opening of our new burn building at the Lt. Michael Neuner Training Center.
As many of you know, Lt. Michael Neuner made the ultimate sacrifice, tragically killed in the line of duty while operating at a house fire in Brewster on June 22nd, 1997. Every day, we honor his memory, and through continuous training in facilities like this one, we not only dedicate ourselves to his legacy but also ensure that he is never forgotten. This building stands as a testament to our commitment to learn and grow, a constant reminder to his family that we will never forget the sacrifice he made.

Our thoughts and prayers continue to remain with Mike and his family, and may he continue to rest in peace.

This event is helping one of our Brewster neighbors who lost everything in a house fire a few months ago.
