Brewster Fire Department

Brewster Fire Department Fire Department In 1870, the Brewster Fire Department was formed by a group of local merchants and willing residents of the community.

Their efforts were the beginning of a life saving and property protection organization that has evolved into a modern fire defense and ambulance service. Today our department covers the town of Southeast which includes the village of Brewster. The Town of Southeast, NY, which was founded in 1788, is located at the crossroads of Interstate highways Route 684 and Route 84, and State Routes 22, 312,

6 and 202. Metro-North Railroad's Harlem Line has two stops that service the area at Brewster Village and Southeast Station off Route 312. The Town is just over 34 square miles with a population of 17,316 - which makes it the second largest town in Putnam County, NY. Each year our department responds to over 1500 calls for emergency assistance. The department membership force is highly trained to react to all types of emergencies. The equipment at our disposal is the most modern and sophisticated available, thus enabling us to offer fast and efficient services. Our current membership status is 130 men and women, and is completely volunteer.

Structure Fire S***m Rd

On Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at approximately 7:19 PM, the Brewster Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at a multi-occupancy dwelling on S***m Road in the Town of Southeast. Due to the nature of the call and multiple calls to 911, mutual aid resources were immediately requested.

First-arriving law enforcement units quickly began evacuating occupants and safely removing animals from the structure prior to the arrival of fire apparatus.

While clearing a previous alarm, Carmel Fire Department Engine 12-2-2 responded directly to the incident and arrived first on scene, immediately initiating fire suppression operations. Brewster Chief 11-1-3, Engine 11-2-4, and Ladder 11-5-1 arrived shortly thereafter and continued fire attack and overhaul operations.

Thanks to the rapid response and coordinated efforts of all responding agencies, the fire was quickly brought under control and successfully contained to the room of origin, preventing further extension throughout the building.

The American Red Cross was contacted to assist displaced residents with temporary housing and support services.

There were no reported injuries to any residents, emergency responders, or animals as a result of the incident.

The Brewster Fire Department would like to thank the Carmel Fire Department, Croton Falls Fire Department, Putnam Lake Fire Department, North Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Putnam County Battalion 13, New York State Police, Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Putnam County SPCA, and the Putnam County Fire Investigation Team for their assistance and cooperation during this incident.

Brewster, NY – June 1, 2026
