Possibly the most eerie place in all of the Smoky Mountains…the ruins of the former Elkmont Wonderland Hotel sit quiet and forgotten in the woods. This old hotel opened in 1912 as a getaway for early Smoky Mountain visitors, with 26 rooms, clawfoot tubs, and a huge wraparound porch that looked out toward Blanket Mountain. It turned into a private club in 1919 and stayed open until 1992. A fire and years of decay brought it down in 2005. Today, hikers still walk up to the stone chimneys, the broken foundation, and a staircase that leads to nowhere—a haunting look at what once stood here.

Now let’s complete our White Hill Mansion tour with our favorite spot… the basement. A speakeasy in the 20’s during prohibition and then a bar until the 80’s, there were two tunnels (now collapsed) that went to the river and unspoken illicit activities, this part of the house always never disappoints. .
