The universe is within reach for first-grade students at Discovery Magnet School, thanks to a dynamic collaboration between Silvermine Arts Center Sacred Heart University's Discovery Science Center and Planetarium, and the Discovery Interdistrict Magnet School in Bridgeport, CT. Through the Silvermine Art Partners Outreach Education Program, young learners took part in a three-day artist residency exploring the wonders of space, science, and self-expression.
The program, titled "Space Explorers: The Universe and You," uses visual art to deepen classroom studies of astronomy—and celebrates the inspiring story of Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space. In honor of Black History Month, students learned about Jemison’s journey and discovered how dreaming big—and working hard—can launch limitless possibilities.
The “Space Explorers” program supports social and emotional learning as well as literacy development, incorporating books that promote empowerment and unity. The residency aligns with Connecticut State Science and Art Standards, reinforcing core concepts while encouraging children to dream beyond the classroom. "This program is a beautiful example of how we can turn STEM into STEAM," said Missy Savard, Coordinator of Educational Outreach at Silvermine Arts Center. "By combining science,
literature, and visual arts, we are helping these students connect to the vastness of the universe and to their own creative potential."
To celebrate the students’ hard work and creativity, their completed canvases will be on public display at Sacred Heart University’s Discovery Science Center and Planetarium through April 15, 2025. Families, friends, and visitors are invited to view the stunning collection, which showcases not only artistic skill but also the curiosity, imagination, and joy of the young learners.
