Happy Memorial Day! Although the weather is not very festive, it is the perfect setting to remember all the brave men and women who have served our country. Thank you to all our veterans and their families for your sacrifices.

In Flanders Fields
By John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

There have been three bridges that have historically connected the Island of Brigantine to the mainland. The first bridge, built in 1924, was destroyed by a hurricane in 1938. Its replacement was also destroyed in 1944. The bridge was replaced a final time in 1972 by the Justice Vincent S. Haneman Memorial Bridge.
