Update on body found in April by Hwy 13

Brigham City police have confirmed through the state Medical Examiner that human remains discovered in April are those of a woman and are renewing calls for help identifying her as their homicide investigation continues.

The remains were found April 2 in a black plastic bag near 2600 W. Highway 13 by railroad workers clearing a construction area. Police, along with search and rescue teams and K9 units from Weber and Box Elder counties, secured the scene and conducted an extensive search. The body was in an advanced state of decomposition.

Investigators said the woman was between 30 and 50 years old and approximately 5 feet to 5 feet 6 inches tall. According to Brigham City Police, she is believed to be of European descent. A separate FBI ViCAP alert described her as white or possibly Hispanic and noted she had brown hair.

She was wearing an Original Cold Storage hoodie, a long-sleeve V-neck shirt, black leggings and black socks. A colored heart-shaped tattoo with lettering was found on her left upper arm, and a police artist’s rendition of the design has been released.

“We are hopeful a friend or family member of the victim’s may recognize this tattoo,” police stated in their original news release.

DNA from the remains has been submitted to a private lab for processing and results are pending. Brigham City Police are treating the case as a homicide and are urging anyone with information to call (435) 856-7023.

An alert about the case has also been posted by the FBI’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (VICAP). Brigham City police have confirmed to the News Journal that VICAP involvement is standard procedure in suspected homicide cases that may have crossed state lines.

Correction: In the story “County bestows high honors on duck hunter for saving friend’s life,” published in yesterday's paper, the recipient’s name was incorrectly given as Weston Leather Rowe; his correct name is Weston Leatherow. We also misspelled Christopher Pebley’s name, omitted that Leatherow pushed the boat 250 yards through knee-deep water, and mistakenly wrote that Pebley’s injury was in the back instead of the leg.

We regret the errors.
