After experiencing gun violence firsthand, school leaders Kevin Lein and Ryan Rollinger advocate for a radical shift: instead of hardening schools with security measures, they're "heartening" them with human connections.

Lein, who was shot by a 16-year-old student while serving as principal, argues that emotional safety matters more than physical barriers.

"You know that, generally, the person who's going to cause this chaos is in the drill too," he says about lockdown procedures. "What will stop them is if, in their heart, they're saying, 'I don't want to harm anybody else.'"

Ten years after a student shot him in his office, Kevin Lein still carries guilt, not about what he did wrong, but about what his school system failed to do

More than 26 years after Columbine, former principal Frank DeAngelis faces another school shooting. A young perpetrator obsessed with the 1999 attack at Columbine, echoing a disturbing pattern seen nationwide.

Colorado families are rallying to save the state's successful free school meals program that currently feeds more than 600,000 students daily.

Since launching in 2023, the Healthy School Meals for All program has transformed school nutrition by eliminating stigma, doubling participation and connecting schools with local farmers. But without voter approval of Propositions LL and MM in November, the program will be dramatically scaled back starting in January.

Read about the coalition of farmers, parents, nutrition workers and educators fighting to keep healthy meals accessible to every Colorado student, regardless of family income.

Since launching in 2023, Colorado's Healthy School Meals for All program has become a cornerstone of daily life for hundreds of thousands of students.
