Mr. Mark Lavon Sullivan, a resident of McCrory, Arkansas, departed this life on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock, at the age of 53. Mark was born on November 19, 1971, at Lee Memorial Hospital in Marianna.

Mark's educational journey began in McCrory, where he developed lifelong friendships and a strong sense of belonging, and he graduated from Kensett High School in 1990. With a passion for woodworking, Mark created countless beautiful pieces of furniture and artwork, leaving a lasting impression on those who appreciated his craftsmanship. His work in construction, remodeling, and cabinetry was not just a profession; it was a reflection of his creativity and dedication. In recent years, he operated his own cabinet shop, where he poured his heart into every project.

Beyond his professional life, Mark found joy in the great outdoors. He loved to hunt and fish, activities that connected him to his childhood spent on a farm and along the serene Bayou DeView. These moments in nature brought him peace and fulfillment, and he cherished the memories made during these adventures.

Mark was a man of faith, and he found comfort in knowing he was saved. His generous spirit extended beyond his life. In a final act of kindness, Mark made anatomical donations, providing hope and life-saving opportunities to others in need.

He was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Lavon Sullivan; his bonus father, Tommy Gene Hay; his paternal grandfather, Eldon Lavon Sullivan; and his maternal grandparents, Shannon and Elizabeth Holtzclaw.

Mark is survived by his mother, Sharon Hay of McCrory; his bonus mother, Linda Sue Sullivan of Searcy; his paternal grandmother, Willie Jane Sullivan of Searcy; his son, Eric Lavon Sullivan and his wife, Shiloh, of Jacksonville; his daughter, Elizabeth Brooke Sullivan Bingham and her husband, Chris, of Bradford; his brother, Robert Timothy Hay and his wife, Patsy, of McCrory; and three cherished grandchildren, Lilly Louise, Sage Elizabeth, and Emma Katherine Bingham. He is also survived by a special uncle, Bobby J. Jones; a special cousin, Troy Jones; and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 21, 2025, in the Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel in McCrory, with Bro. Larry Hodges and Bro. Eddie Addison officiating. Interment will follow at Woodman Cemetery near McCrory. Friends are invited to visit at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until the service time.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Glenn Bingham, Jimmy Hicks, Buddy Huffman, James Huffman Jr., Lonny Immel, and Brandon West. Honorary pallbearers are Jimmy Caudle and Jimmy Reynolds.

Memorial donations may be made to Lakeside Missionary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 42, Des Arc, AR 72040, or the McCrory Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 540, McCrory, AR 72101.

Arrangements are entrusted to Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home of McCrory.

Newsprint not affected by increase in US tariff on Canadian imports

Yesterday, President Donald Trump announced an increase in the tariff on imports from Canada from 25 to 35%; however, the administration has confirmed this morning that the exemption for USMCA-compliant products will remain in force after the increase takes effect.

This means that at this time, newsprint from Canadian mills will NOT be subject to tariffs when the new rate takes effect.

In December of 2016, Katie Jacques asked me if I’d like to purchase the Brinkley Argus. At first, I said no, but then, realizing what had just “fallen into my lap” I jumped at the chance. Soon after, the building burned that the newspaper was housed in and my family and I moved Katie and her operation over to a spare room in one of our properties. The rest is pretty much history..... Kate stayed on for a while, Glenda Arnett ( who has been with the various owners for over 50 years) stayed with us and around the middle of the year, Emily Johnson joined us with her incredible graphic design capabilities. My mother, Beth, writes when she wants to, mostly personal interest stories and keeps me in line with my billing (sometimes). This has been a helluva year and I’m looking forward to many more, growing our paper, getting it online soon and serving Monroe County.
