BRISTOL — Until August 14, the Newfound Area School Board had not acted on a May request by the newly appointed curriculum coordinator, Ariel Maloney, to “take action in remedying the potential damage to my public and professional reputations” as the result of comments by two school board members who had questioned her suitability for the job. At its August meeting, the board decided to drop the matter.

House Bill 1265, known as the Students First Act, signed into law by Governor Chris Sununu, requires the disclosure of school district costs through 10-year line charts showing the average teacher salary, the average administrator’s salary, the annual cost per pupil, and the salaries of the top four highest-paid administrators in the school district. The law also requires providing the pay of any “directors or coordinators of diversity, equity, and inclusion”.

Of all the hiking trails scattered throughout the Lakes Region, my top choice for the first hike of the season is the Goose Pond Trail near Wellington State Park in Alexandria. Goose Pond is located in the 400-acre Sugarloaf Ridge-Goose Pond Conservation Area, with the pond itself having about 3,000 feet of shoreline.

The US ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, told the Security Council that the US wants to “deter and defend against any future attack and avoid regional conflict” amidst fears that Iran may retaliate against Israel after the assassination in July of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. President Joe Biden Jr. again suggested a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza as a way of deterring a spread of the conflict.

House Bill 1622 would have strengthened the public’s “right to know” by requiring agencies to explain why they dismiss certain public comments when developing their rules, with “facts, data, interpretations, and policy choices”, and that they post public comments, whether written or filed electronically, on their websites. The bill also would codify current procedures, such as returning fees that were inappropriately collected under expired rules.

Russia has declared a state of emergency in the Kursk region as it tries to repel Ukrainian troops who have advanced into Russian territory. Top Russian officials seemingly dismissed intelligence warnings that Ukrainian soldiers were gathering near the border as much as two weeks before they began the assault, and nobody briefed President Vladimir Putin, according to a person close to the Kremlin. Defensive forces inside Russia were caught off guard and offered little initial resistance when as many as 1,000 Ukrainian troops, backed by tanks and armored vehicles, advanced.

Representative Alissandra Murray (D-Manchester) was the sponsor of House Bill 1054, that would have allowed the $1,435,384 in funding for the Northern Border Alliance Task Force to expire by July 2025. The bill passed the House, but the Senate killed it, along with Murray’s House Bill 1528, that would have required the Department of Safety to issue quarterly reports on the number of stops and arrests made by the task force.

Republicans Kelly Ayotte and Chuck Morse and Democrats Cinde Warmington and Joyce Craig, all running for the seat being vacated by Governor Chris Sununu, have said they oppose Casella Waste Management’s proposal to site a new landfill near Forest Lake State Park in Dalton. They also have expressed concern about the 900,000 tons of out-of-state trash that is disposed of in New Hampshire, and about PFAS pollution.

House Bill 318, which takes effect on January 1, 2025, will change the way those accused of violent crimes will be handled after their arrest. Currently, all defendants arrested outside of court hours have bail commissioners decide whether they can be released on bail ahead of their arraignment. Under HB 318, those arrested for serious offenses such as homicide, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, felony-level domestic violence, aggravated felonious assault, felonious sexual assault, kidnapping, felony-level stalking, human trafficking, robbery, or possession, manufacture, or distribution of child sexual abuse images or computer po*******hy, and child exploitation may be held in jail until arraignment, which must take place within 24 hours of the arrest.

In trying to catch up this morning, I was struck by the fact that my original assessment of the Federal Reserve’s response to inflation may have been correct: I thought it would be devastating to the economy. The succession of rapid rate increases did not allow enough time to assess the success of each move, and the Fed took the position that job losses would be good because fewer people would be able to afford to buy products, therefore driving down prices. I thought it surely would lead us into a recession.
