I worked when we had our dogs, and they survived just fine being alone. Some of my grandchildren have two and they are large dogs who jump all over when I arrive....

People brought in dogs, cats, rabbits; you name it. Everyone was friendly and chatted with each other about their animals. One lady brought in a cat that someone dropped off at her house.
