The Toms River Police Department and PBA Local 137 proudly announces the retirement of Corporal George Fernicola, marking the end of a distinguished 30+year career in law enforcement.
With the retirement of Corporal Fernicola, as of May 1st the Toms River Police Department will now be down to 153 officers, that is 10 officers fewer than our full staffing of 163 officers as of January of 2024.
We look forward to introducing you to our newest officer if and when they are hired. We are anxious to return our department to its full capacity of 163 officers as soon as possible to ensure our continued efficient service to the community we so proudly serve.
George began his law enforcement journey in 1994 as a seasonal officer in Lavallette, graduated from the Monmouth County Police Academy in 1995, and served with Monmouth University Police and Lakehurst PD before joining DTPD/TRPD-first as a dispatcher in 2000, then as a patrol officer in 2001.
Most of his career was spent in patrol, where he became a trusted mentor and Field Training Officer to 8 new hires. He also advised our Explorer (now Cadet) program, helping inspire future officers.
George was deeply involved in the PBA
—serving as Treasurer and helping lead major community events like Vest-a-Cop, Ocean of Love Billboard-a-thon, and the annual Dodgeball Tournament.
Behind the scenes, he was vital to our operations-managing CAD, body-worn cameras, special duty scheduling, and alarm maintenance.
He also served as a CPR and active shooter/RTF instructor, making sure we were always prepared.
Corporal Fernicola's legacy is one of leadership, dedication, and heart.
Thank you for everything, George— you've made a lasting impact on this department and the community. Enjoy your well-earned retirement!
