The Emotional Limbo of a DMDD Mom
No one really talks about this part.
The part where life keeps moving, but your mind is stuck between the last meltdown and wondering when the next one will come.
The part where you still have work to do, other children to love, bills to pay, laundry to fold, and a smile to find—even when your heart feels heavy.
There is so much I don’t share. Not because I’m hiding it, but because some battles belong to my child, not the internet.
This is all new. I’m learning as I go. I care. I love fiercely. I try. I adjust. I apologize when I need to. I celebrate the smallest wins. And some days…I’m just tired.
I’ve learned that no two kids are alike. Gentle parenting may work beautifully for one child, while another needs firmer boundaries, different tools, and a completely different approach. Parenting isn’t one-size-fits-all, especially when you’re raising a child with DMDD.
The hardest part is the limbo.
Wondering if today will be a peaceful day or a hard one. Wondering if you’re doing enough or too much. Wondering if this new strategy will help or if you’ll be back at square one tomorrow.
It’s living between hope and heartbreak.
But even here, I choose to keep showing up. I choose to keep learning. I choose to keep loving my child through the hardest moments and believing that neither of us is defined by our hardest days.
If you’re a DMDD parent living in this in-between space, I see you. This road is heavy, but you don’t have to pretend it isn’t.
