When Our Story Becomes Someone Else's Motive
This one can get us into trouble quickly.
Someone says something.
And instead of considering only what they said, we decide why they said it.
“She said that because she's jealous.”
“He's just trying to control me.”
“She did that because she wanted attention.”
“He didn't invite me because he wanted to embarrass me.”
Maybe.
But do we actually know?
There's a difference between observing behavior and assigning motive.
Behavior:
She interrupted me three times.
Assigned motive:
She doesn't respect me.
The behavior may need addressing.
But the motive is something we've added.
What if she's nervous?
What if she grew up in a family where everyone talks over one another?
What if she genuinely doesn't realize she's doing it?
Or...
what if she really is being disrespectful?
That's possible too.
The goal isn't to excuse everybody.
The goal is to become comfortable saying:
“I don't know yet.”
Those four words can save relationships.
Curiosity Gives Us Another Door 🚪
What happens if, instead of immediately deciding what someone meant, we become curious?
“Hey, when you said that earlier, I wasn't sure what you meant. Can you help me understand?”
Think about the difference.
“Why would you say something like that to me?”
already contains an accusation.
But:
“Can you help me understand what you meant?”
opens a door.
Same event.
Different approach.
Different energy.
And potentially...
a completely different ripple.
But What If My Story Is Right?
This is important.
Sometimes it is.
Sometimes someone really is being disrespectful.
Sometimes someone is lying.
Sometimes the pattern we've noticed really exists.
Critical thinking doesn't mean talking ourselves out of what we're seeing.
And compassion doesn't require becoming naive.
We're not trying to convince ourselves that everyone has wonderful motives.
We're trying to make sure we're responding to what is actually happening, rather than automatically reacting to something we haven't established as true.
There's a big difference.
If the evidence eventually confirms the concern...
then we deal with reality.
Maybe we have a conversation.
Maybe we establish a boundary.
Maybe we step away.
But now we're responding deliberately instead of reacting to an assumption.
Confirmation Bias — When We Start Collecting Evidence
Here's something fascinating our minds can do.
Once we begin believing a story, we naturally notice things that seem to support it.
Suppose I've decided:
“Nobody appreciates me.”
Someone forgets to say thank you.
See?
I knew it.
Someone doesn't notice something I did.
There it is again.
Someone is distracted while I'm talking.
Nobody cares.
But what happened to the person who thanked me yesterday?
The friend who checked on me?
The person who complimented something I did?
Those moments may not fit the story I've been rehearsing.
So they can become easier to overlook.
Psychologists call this tendency confirmation bias—we tend to notice and interpret information in ways that support what we already believe.
That's why examining our stories matters.
Because once we've decided what the story is...
we can become very good at finding evidence for it.
What if...
I'm not seeing everything that's happening?
What if I'm mostly seeing what I've trained myself to look for?

Day 8 – The Reflection of the Artist 🎨
Have you ever stood in front of a beautiful painting and wondered about the artist who created it?
Every masterpiece reflects the heart, imagination, and character of the one who painted it.
The same is true of creation.
Every sunrise... Every mountain... Every ocean wave... Every flower... Every child... Every color...
They all whisper something about the heart of their Creator.
The beauty we see isn't the destination—it is the invitation.
Creation points beyond itself to the greatest Artist of all.
As we slow down and really begin to notice, we discover that every color is another brushstroke of God's love... every season reveals another part of His character... and every beautiful moment invites us to know Him a little more.
Today, don't just admire the masterpiece.
Take a moment to appreciate the Artist.
