The deadline for Bronx businesses to secure a contract with one of the companies approved by the city to haul away commercial waste is less than a week away and business owners could be stuck with more expensive services if they miss the Sunday, Nov. 30 deadline, according to the Department of Sanitation (DSNY).

The second phase of DSNY's rollout of the new "Commercial Waste Zones" launched borough-wide on Oct. 1 for the two zones, Bronx East and West. Businesses will be required to negotiate a contract to manage their trash with a private company, a so-called "carter," that services their zone before the deadline or the city will assign them a carter at the maximum rate with the most infrequent service, according to DSNY officials.

On Nov. 21, Grei Mendez, a Bronx jury convicted the operator of a Kingsbridge daycare on charges of second-degree murder for a toddler's death by fentanyl poisoning in 2023. Sentencing in the case is expected Dec. 9.

Nicholas Feliz Dominici, who was just 22 months old, died from fentanyl exposure at the daycare on Sept. 15, 2023, and three other children were hospitalized.

"Nothing we can do will bring back Nicholas," said Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark said in a Nov. 21 statement. "His death has torn a hole in the hearts of his mother, father and siblings, and saddened the entire Bronx community. I hope that these convictions will give the family a sense of justice and help them to gain peace and closure."

A new photo exhibit reflecting New York City's migrant communities has made its way to the track at Van Cortlandt Park, after stops in Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan throughout this fall.

The portraits will remain on display through Nov. 24 and were shot by Brooklyn-based photographer Oscar B. Castillo, who is originally from Venezuela and also lived in Spain and France.

When people see the work, Castillo said he hopes they focus on the commonality of human experience and embrace their own immigrant roots.
"Unless you are from a local indigenous community, you are an immigrant, from three days ago or from three hundred years ago," he said.

An early campaign ad by Michael Blake, who is challenging Rep. Ritchie Torres for the District 15 Congressional seat, caught the attention of two prominent Bronx Democratic clubs, who accuse Blake of political opportunism and stoking divisiveness.

Blake's two-minute video includes social media clips of people denouncing Torres' staunch support of Israel — among them being 19-year-old Guy Christensen, who previously posted a now-removed video in which he appeared to support the May fatal shooting of two Israeli embassy staffers in Washington, D.C.

The video has been removed from Blake's campaign website, and his campaign did not respond to question as to why it was taken down. But the ad remains pinned to the top of his account for X, formerly known as Twitter.

Environmental advocates with the Stop the Cross Bronx Expansion Coalition and Bronx elected officials on Tuesday called on Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Department of Transportation to look beyond their plans to repair the Cross Bronx Expressway and commit, not just to reconstruction, but to traffic reduction and solutions to stop polluting.

"Hunts Point's new marine terminal shows exactly what the Bronx needs: smart freight solutions that get dirty trucks off our streets,"said Siddhartha Sánchez, executive director of Bronx River Alliance. "After suffering decades of pollution and sickness from the Cross Bronx and other major highways, moving goods onto blue highways will clean our air without breaking the bank."

Advocates with the Stop the Cross Bronx Expansion Coalition and Bronx elected officials called on the state to look for solutions to end pollution.

It's that time of the year when colorful stringed lights brighten the streets, people warm their bellies with cups of hot chocolate and festive music plays in stores and restaurants across the city. Most everyone is getting into the spirit of the season, including the New York Botanical Garden as they bring back their 34th annual Holiday Train show filled with nostalgia and wonder.

As visitors enter, they are greeted with a loud "all aboard" by train conductors holding lanterns and wearing all blue uniforms.

Familiar buildings make a cameo: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Bethesda Fountain in Central Park, the Stephen A. Schwartzman Library on Fifth Avenue with two new structures unveiled this year.
