As the holiday season in the Bronx draws to a close, many will be finishing off the last remaining glasses of Coquito, either made at home with family and friends or feverishly hunted down through recommended experts in local Facebook groups.

The coconut rum drink with notes of cinnamon rises in popularity during the Christmas and New Year’s season due to its Puerto Rican roots. Nearly 240,000 Bronxites are from the island, according to the most recent estimates from New York City Department of Planning.

So, what makes a truly great Coquito? Coquito fans and industry experts told the Bronx Times that regardless of individual variations or flavors in recipes, great Coquito has quality ingredients, Puerto Rican rum and the ability to bring people together.

Just Home, the supportive housing project on the Jacobi Medical Center campus for people leaving incarceration with major medical illnesses, may not be getting a new home after all.

The project will not be moved to Brooklyn despite the Adams administration’s promise to relocate it before his term expired, outgoing Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro confirmed to the Bronx Times on Dec. 29.

Mastro said the Adams administration made “substantial progress” towards moving Just Home to Bushwick instead of Morris Park, including identifying a location and nonprofit partner for supportive services. However, the approvals are not complete, leaving the issue to incoming Mayor Zohran Mamdan, he said.

Community members held an evening vigil on Friday for Pamela Guerrero, 29, who was found dead at a Soundview apartment building on Dec. 21.

The circumstances surrounding Guerrero’s death remain a mystery, especially to her family, who demanded justice at the vigil.

Few details are known about how Guerrero died. According to information from the NYPD, officers responded to a 911 call the morning of Dec. 21 reporting an unconscious person found at 1225 Stratford Ave., about two blocks from her mother’s home.

Officers found Guerrero unresponsive at the “rear” of the apartment building, according to the NYPD spokesperson. The investigation remains ongoing, and a cause of death has not yet been determined.

The New York State Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that it would add an additional public hearing on Jan. 6 for the Cross Bronx Expressway Five Bridges Project.

This will be the fourth hearing where community members can offer feedback on a nearly $1 billion construction plan which many transit and environmental advocates are concerned goes beyond what’s needed to repair the five bridges.

The move takes a step toward what a coalition of community and environmental groups have been asking for: a more concerted effort at public engagement. They’ve been fighting for years to have more say over the project, and slowly the state has paired back plans that community members felt were the worst options.

City Island Rising marked a recent round of infrastructure improvements in Pelham Bay Park following the completion of another partial street repaving by the New York City Department of Transportation, including work on the Hutchinson River Parkway exit ramp.

The Bronx-based community organization said the Hutchinson River Parkway resurfacing is the third such roadway improvement within the park over the past year, celebrating its partial resurfacing rather than simply filling potholes.

While lauding the progress, City Island Rising said its work isn’t finished.

The group said it plans to continue pushing for additional long-term resilience measures, especially as climate change increases the risks faced by communities surrounded by water.

It was hardly a typical day at the Creo College Preparatory Charter School in the South Bronx.

Following a day where students sat for hours, taking mock state exams, they were pampered by barbers and nail technicians, petted therapy dogs, sang karaoke, played video games and ate ice-cream.

“As adults, after we do a big, hard thing we reward ourselves,” said Benjamin Samuels-Kalow, the founder of Creo College Prep. “If we get a promotion, we might go on a vacation or treat ourselves to a haircut or go shopping.”

All of their students –not including those who had excessive absences– spent one day before break indulging in self care at a school that seeks to encourage responsibility as well as provide rewards.

“There are a lot of options,” said sixth grader Madison Garcia, who enjoyed having her nails done and spending time with a dog. “After we do this, we go on break. It’s to send you out with a little care.”

MTA employees at the 161 St/Yankee Stadium subway station are bringing holiday cheer to families in need by providing free toys to children who use the South Bronx station.

The team has also decorated the station’s customer service center for the holiday, along with a creative “Elf on the Shelf” for the kids in the neighborhood to enjoy.

Esmeralda Pacheco, an MTA employee had the idea to try and bring the holiday spirit to her station. When she told her co-workers, they happily help her put it all together.

“I love doing things like this. It just brings us all together,” Pacheco said.

“This is my home away from home. I love seeing the kids smile,” she added, saying that it was her main source of inspiration.

Stepping from the frigid temperatures and snow covered streets of the South Bronx into Sankofa Haus, felt like entering another era.

Two sharply dressed men greeted guests at the door of the Mott Haven event space and offered to take coats, setting the tone for an evening that felt less like a modern concert and more like a 1920s underground jazz club.

It was the perfect setting for Acute Inflections, the duo known for blending jazz sounds with R&B. Comprised of vocalist Elasea Douglas and bassist Sadiki Pierre, Acute Inflections effortlessly wove together their vintage sounds with a playful “sunshine and grumpy” comedic routine that involved the audience in their set.

As the night unfolded, the audience was drawn into an intimate musical exchange. Douglas’s voice moved seamlessly between sultry melodies and modern improvisations, while Pierre’s bass provided both rhythmic grounding and a roadmap for the two to follow.

It felt more like a private dinner party rather than a show you could buy tickets to.

Just two years ago, Jamel Lewis was living a life that was anything but healthy. He was addicted to crack and co***ne and rarely ate, and when he did, he subsisted on Little Debbie Honey Buns topped with ice cream.

Today, Lewis is a completely different person. He has been sober for nearly two years and leads a healthy cooking program at Samaritan Daytop Village in the South Bronx, where he whips up dishes like Italian-style pasta with beans, chicken and vegetables and helps educate people pursuing their own recovery journey.
