In Ghana, travelling especially on the Accra-Kumasi highway is like you have signed your d,eath warrant - Ghanaian lecturer at Oxford University shares
Ghanaian lecturer at Oxford University, George Asiamah, has ignited public conversation with a viral Facebook post highlighting the d,angerous state of the Accra-Kumasi highway and the glaring inequality it represents.
After arriving in Accra from the US, Asiamah planned to travel to Kumasi and was stunned by a GHC 1,300 one-way flight fare.
Choosing a GHC 120 VIP bus instead, he humorously described the economic logic behind his decision—only to encounter the harsh reality of Ghana’s road conditions.
“Our bus tried overtaking six cargo trucks… A minibus came at full speed from the opposite direction. Only God saved us,” he wrote.
He lamented the frequent loss of lives on that stretch and criticized the state’s misplaced priorities.
“We build cathedrals faster than highways. A country where flying is for the rich and dying is for the poor.”
Asiamah is calling for the Accra-Kumasi road to be declared a national emergency, warning that every life lost on it reflects a failure in urgency and leadership.
“In Ghana, the journey itself is the real emergency.”
