Citywide ground fogging for mosquitos to take place tonight (Wednesday, August 20)
Brookings, SD – Weather permitting, the City of Brookings Public Works – Street Division will again conduct mosquito ground fogging between 8:30 p.m. and midnight tonight (Wednesday, August 20). The treatment areas will include bike trails and parks.
“We’ve had a significant amount of rain this season. While we treat the areas we can get to, we also need help from residents to reduce the locations mosquitos can breed on their private properties,” said Street Supervisor Josh McClain, “Removing sources of standing water in yards, such as emptying water from tires, toys, or buckets, and keeping vegetation cut short can help to reduce the mosquito population.”
The City’s ground-fogging equipment is loud and travels at speeds of 10 to 15 mph. The mosquito-control pickups are identified and travel with flashing yellow and white lights, so people can easily recognize them.
Although mosquito-control insecticides pose extremely low risks to humans and domestic pets, some people may prefer to minimize or avoid exposure to these chemicals. Some common-sense steps to help reduce exposure include staying indoors during the fogging activity and closing windows and doors.
